Hi,

I have decided on a theme for my scaven army, I'm going for an urban style, sewer rat kinda feel, lots of clan eshin and clan pestilenz (not sure if it falls in line with official fluff but not too bothered about that.) My colour schemes for the models are going to be based around greys and dark green (catachan).

For my bases I want to get a kinda mud effect, but not dry mud, wet slimey mud, like you would get in a damp city in fantasy times (dont think tarmac would exsist). I'm also going to work in bits of green slime and stuff on the bigger models (if it doesn't look to cheesey).

Any how, I have no idea how to even biggin making an effect like this. So would appreciate some ideas.

cheers for any help.

PVA glue (maybe mixed with water) and washes should work but I haven't tried this myself so you'll probably need to experiment a bit.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

sugar + elmers glue. Youll have to play around with the right mix ratio for a bit but once you get it, it works perfectly. Itll take a few days to dry, then just smear some watered down elmers to help seal it all in. Make sure to add you brown washes in there for the correct color. It ends up drying rock hard and looks wet and muddy

I havnt messed with anything else, but I imagine if you didnt want to use sugar, you can get away with baby powder and the like. Again gotta get the mix ratio right or it wont get your desired results

I have been mixing scorched brown paint with some grit basing material. Seems to be doing pretty well.

For the bases for my muddy city fighting guard army I've used a mix of model railway gravel, sand and a bit of flock. I give it all a black undercoat, drybrush it with fortress gray then give it another drybrush of scorched brown. Any liquid mud areas I give a coat of MP's Earth Brown (bubonic brown I think for GW) before then going over the thing with random dabbling of choas black and varing shades of brown and orange (leaving it thick in places to make it appear wet). Give the wetter areas a coat of gloss varnish and your done. It doesn't have to be difficult, just randomly dapple the colours where appropriate and work it up till you think it looks alright. =P

Secret Weapon has a tutorial for mud. It's pimping their products, but the formula of colored powder, plaster and water effects should be easy enough copy.

That secret weapon tutorial is probably the best you'll find, but what I did was buy a tub of spackle at Home Depot (its that white plaster putty type stuff that they sell in buckets). Get yourself a putty knife and go to town. Prime it black, go to town with earthy tones, and then hit it with some gloss varnish/water effects. done.

Vellejo white pumice is the way to go in my opiionion, I used it for a FoW German army and it worked wonderfully.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/314300.page <-- Link to a P&M Blog called "Muddy Times." Fantastically muddy DKoK army, with the painter's mud recipe detailed about halfway down the page. I'd just repost it, but then you wouldn't get to oggle all of that muddy goodness.

PVA + sand = mud (that dries like concrete). Put in pigment of some sort (this can just be regular paint) before and/or after to effect.
