Hi dakka, another forum I started a few days ago began discussing Modern orks and the old comedy orks.

So the question is simple, do you like the old Orks that were the comedy relife of the 40k universe, or do you like the more brutal and more cunning modern orks ?

Please tell us what you like about the type of orks you chose

The Orks still seem pretty damn funny to me.

I like the newer Orks. There still comical. I mean I laugh as I roll over my friends. Anyways, like the newer ones there less goofy and more just insane. I mean straping a J-TOW rocket to your back, well thats just funny. But you gotta respect that too. I think I like the new Orks more because the love the reactions I get when I show up with new scratchbuilt stuff and people laugh and say "You did what?!" But there not goofy, I don't feel silly playing them. Hey I like the the 80's as much as anyone but I don't leave my Pretty in Pink album laying out on the counter if you know what I mean.

I prefer the newer orks but then again they still are the grimdark comic relief.

I'm both chaotic and orderly. I value my own principles, and am willing to go to extreme lengths to enforce them, often trampling on the very same principles in the process. At best, I'm heroic and principled; at worst, I'm hypocritical and disorderly. I am Red And White.

orks are funny.

only a race that takes itself so seriously can remain funny in the Grimdarkness.

NO ORKS. They must all be absorbed by the Tyranid's!

Seriously though, I like the newer mix of more seriousness yet the comical relief of their odd antics.

The Orks still have a lot of comedic elements to them.

They tend to not be as "funny" when you see them from the perspective of humans who are fighting them. And in that case it makes sense, in Fifteen Hours the Orks are shown to be terrifying monsters because that's what they are to the average Guardsman. The Orks have killed billions if not trillions of humans by this point, they've laid entire systems to waste and enslaved entire worlds. There is a dark side to them that is appropriate in fluff.

The most famous one of all is named after a former British Prime Minister, and I love it.

Old orks were too clowny for me, new orks are still clowny, but in more of a Pennywise way.

One can be funny without being overtly comedy. The new Orks accomplish this-- their reasoning is bizarre and therefor funny, but also makes sense.

From Codex: Imperialis....

Griznak didn't mind the death. He was an Ork. The senseless waste of life didn't appall him. He applauded it. He lived to fight. Fighting was what life was all about. Death was part of fighting, everybody knew that, from the youngest Wildboy to the oldest Nob. Every Ork accepted death the way he accepted the possibility of a buggy accident. It was what happened to someone else. And if it did happen to you, so what? Your soul went back to Gork and Mork to be belched into another body so you could fight again.

Orks aren't afraid of death. Sure,. they'll avoid it if they can, but hey, if you die in an orky way, what do you care?

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

I miss the little bits like where Young Orkz rebel and feel the need to get into tightly organised groups and march around in unity. But other than that I have no objection to today's orks.

They still have this with the stormboyz.
I like the new modern ones, the old silly version was to silly for my tastes.

the Modern orks still have some comedy relief in them in the fact you can loot anything you want from any other race. (love that rule ) and you can make almost anything into whatever you want and just say the orks built it so therefore it works for them.

Why walk when you can WAAAAAGH!!!!!

I think they've achieved a suitable balance of GRIMDARK! and comedy. Its definitely more subtle, but the whole race is still pretty wacky.

Yes, it's not like a switch was flipped as the pole suggests. They've achieved a nice balance of menace and comedic relief now.

Just to chime in, yes, the new Orks are still funny, which I like.

The older less grimdark Orks were good too, but the newer fluff seems to have more character in a way.

I think what happened was, they still aren't serious, but they fit in a little bit better with the other races.

I like GorkaMorka orks. Those were some right proper orks!

"Khorne is a noble warrior who respects strength and bravery, who takes no joy in destroying the weak, and considers the helpless unworthy of his wrath. It is said that fate will spare any brave warrior who calls upon Khorne's name and pledges his soul to the blood god. It is also said that Khorne's daemons will hunt down and destroy any warrior who betrays his honour by killing a helpless innocent or murdering in cold blood..."

They still have tongue in cheek humor (Time warp to kill yourself so you can steal your own weapon----and end your own Waaagh---awesome).

Just the universe canon has shifted over the years----before we had laughable biker squats, Inquisitor Clouseau, Orks, etc. 40k takes itself more serious now----but not completely serious.

They're still funny, in a very Maury Povich/Jerry Springer trashy way. You know: they're violent and take themselves super seriously, and *can* be dangerous, but when they aren't threatening you directly they're actually so pathetic it's funny. Their priorities are completely bonkers compared to those of real humans.

On Maury today, there was a girl who hoe'd it out to somebody for a double bacon cheeseburger. In the 41st millennium, I'm pretty sure she'd qualify for Orkiness, or at least be passed around the Ork camp a few times.

Sure, they're funny, wacky and hard to take seriously... right up until you're trying to pull a choppa out of your skull
