Hello!

Been lurking for a couple days and decided to subscribe.

My friends recently got into Warhammer 40k and proceeded to introduce me to it. Instantly liked the idea of building and painting an army of miniatures and then using them to wreak havoc. I started looking through all the armies and the one that caught my eye the most was Dark Eldar. Now as soon as I told my buddies I was going to build a Dark Eldar army everyone in our group suggested not to do so. Apparently the Dark Eldar are a hard army to use to learn the game due to the fact that they are extremely unforgiving and tricky to use. They all suggested I use one of the Marine Chapters or Vanilla Marines to get a hang of how to play.

I'd appreciate any advice anyone has to give on the matter!(even though I think I have my heart set on the Dark Eldar lol)

Thanks and Im looking forward to learning more and becoming part of the community.

Welcome to Dakka Dakka!

Now, I must warn you that Dark Eldar are indeed a difficult army to get the handle upon, they've a very steep learning curve.

However, once you master that you will become a very tough opponent upon the field, I'd say do it. Just, be prepared and understand that you're not playing the tactically forgiving marines and come to understand that you can and will lose a game upon mistakes with Dark Eldar. But, don't be one to shy away from difficulty

I say play small point games at first, like 200 points or so small skirmishes, to understand how everything works against the more frequent Marine opponents.

Welcome to dakka,

ShatteredBlade is wise in his teachings, it may be hard, but nothing in life should be easy and the results you can get from such hard work would be totally worth it.

From one new Archon to another, do it! I went through exactly the same process as you have done, teetered on the edge of going with marines but in the end the DE won hands down for a number of reasons:

I thought the miniatures were cooler
The codex is awesome
They have an amazing story
Some fantastic weapons and units

I didn't pick them for how they'd play on the battlefield - being new to this generation of 40k I didn't have enough knowledge about it. The key to remember is that you have to do what interests you, if its DE, then it's DE.

Welcome to Commoragh! And Dakka, though I'm new here myself so not sure if I have the right to welcome people yet...!

From a a guy who plays marines. I think you should definitely play DE. They have a wicked awesome codex and their HQ are fast and deadly. The key to playing them is getting in and getting out. Unlike Marines who can take some sustained beating for awhile the DE are very fragile, but beyond that they have some great shooty units and some completely unbelievable CC units that can shred anything. Go with your instinct...
