After flirting with tau i think i have decided i want a more robust army to complement my Dark eldar.
I like the space wolves rules alot, dont worry, i Wont be doing thunderwolves (Partly to avoid the nerdrage) but don't like the whole vikings in space.
I would do it as a homebrew chapter that wouldn't have any connection to SW. I would possibly want 'Bjorn' (ven dread HQ) to lead them
For my grey hunters, would showing them to be more 'Veteran/hardened' looking be appropriate for counter attack? Would this be too close to vanilla marines to be acceptable?
Another couple of things:
What would be acceptable for wolf scouts? ( I like the idea of infiltrator badasses, too awesome for power armour.)
What would be acceptable to represent a rune/wolf priest?

Thanks for looking and hopefully contributing. Also again my apologies in advance for joining the 'counts as' camp

Why not use standard Marine models and use a different animal than wolf for them, but just use the codex and count it "as is"?

They are gonna be, most likely, called the Olympic Lions and have a slight greek theme (though nothing too obvious). I could stretch to a couple of pelts here and there, and a guy with the sort of hood made of the lions face would be good. On the whole i just want them to look a bit more hardened, extra wargear, battle damage etc.

Finland... the country next to Sweden? No! That's Norway! Finland is to the east! No! That's Russia!

For a badass look I would recommend vanilla marines, and Steel Legion/Vostroyans for Wolf Scouts.

Sweet Jesus, Nurgle and Slaanesh in the same box!?
No, just Nurgle and Slaanesh, Jesus will be sold seperately in a blister.

you are going to provoke another nerd rage... if you do this before Dark Angels get the faqs
"canine-ish lions"
luckily most of it is under the water now

Scibor make nice lion helmet and shoulderpads or you could make them spartan esque

Yeah i quite like some of the lion based stuff from scribor, though as i said the greek part will be only very subtle, they aint gonna be carrying big spartan shields and spears etc.

I almost went wolf for my knights of praxis.

It was all very knights of the round, with individual units all being recruited from the same noble house, with a wolfguard as the head of the household and grey hunter kinsmen.

Lone wolves were supposed to be questing knights, and the sagas and oaths fitted in with the character of the unit really well.

Cavalry were well, just horsemen.

Each house was going to have it's own theme atop a unifying colour scheme across the army, so one house may have had a couple of questing knights, a few knights errant (scouts) and the retinue (grey hunter with wolfguard to lead them).

Vehicles would have been done in the same way - chapter colourscheme and then heraldry for each house. Gave up halfway through, as everyone just thought they were Fists.

Be prepared to give a diatribe before you play.

Personally "counts as" isn't a problem, provided that there's real character there. If things are only represented to the bare minimum, and the list is something that could have been taken as a vanilla force, but just wants to use the long fang rules, then it's a bit flimsy.

The rules worked better with the character of the chapter than templars or vanilla rules.

I don't like the name, olympic lions, it just doesn't seem EPIC enough... Lions of Olympia sure, but not olympic lions.... Also I am imagining a devastator trying to pole vault a rhino with his lascannon, "hey guys look what i can do!". Lol, sorry, just thought I'd share the workings of my mind.

All good stuff thanks guys. Yeah writing it down so much i prefer Olympic Tigers which was the original. That or Rampant Tigers.
@Phayse you reminded me of another potential name i thought up a while ago:
The Diatribers or Diatribors.
Also giant horses is tempting as ever since i saw Archaon for the first time i realised how cool they could look, but no! I promised myself no thunderwolves!

Just to condense it:
Olympic Tigers? (Lions is out)
Or
Rampant tigers?
Or
Diatribors/Diatribers? (Personal fav.)

@Shas for some reason i dont like 'Of's.... Dunno why.

That is a good name the only problem is Olympia is a well known planet in 40k fiction. I dont think a loyalist chapter would like to be associated with it. Olympic is just different enough imo.

Saying what i said earlier about not liking 'Of's My favourite name for a chapter is the 'Praetors of Orpheus', they even have their own shoulder pads for sale from Games workshop, never seen anyone collecting them. They are an ultramarine successor though so playing them as anything else but vanilla would be no good.

Finland... the country next to Sweden? No! That's Norway! Finland is to the east! No! That's Russia!

Doom Tigers? (cool, but a bit chaotic)
The Holy Lions of Terra? (lots of words, but why not?)
The Golden Lions of Olympus? (epic?)
Golden Turtles? (EPIC!)
Spartan Warriors? (too Greeky?)
Hoplites of Olympus? (the Golden Hoplites of Olympus might be better)

1. As noted above. Remember each chapter provides a tithe of geneseed to the AM. If you feel they need an animalistic geneseed to have this style then have this as a founding using canus geneseed given to the AM. With a proper haircut and something called "bathing" they are no different than any other chapter (except needing better dentists of course).
2. General marine models or pick and choose from the full panopoly of minis available. They don't have to be an animal, just have an aggressive combat style. 3. As #2 but have them as a founding of the luna wolves (HH books). Again its just an aggressive style of combat.

Oh I am liking this.
I hate to say this but the UM minis might have some bits to be helpful.
Think ROMAN LEGION STANDARD BEARERS for your vets and such. Sorry my photobucket doesn't work so links.
Roman standard bearers. I think this would be perfect for you vets or heroes or suck to give that feel:

Thanks for the great responses guys. It seems when you want a chapter named people love helping out. I went and bought some models (Battleforce + razorback) thus blowing my hobby budget for a while, My dark eldar can kiss there promised raider goodbye.

Thanks to frazzled and his inspiring link of the roman standard bearer (i think they are called Aquilifiers iirc). I think i have my wolf guard planned out i christen them 'Aquilifier Guard' or Possibly 'Nemean Guard' as Heracles wore the pelt of the Nemean Lion. Unfortunately after some research i have discovered that Lions as a name is a bit common for homebrew so i think i will go with my backup name of Diatribers. Sorry guys.

Still need suggestions on the scouts and Rune priests and making them look more 'Hard-Man'.

Scouts - do you have the minis now? Put them in ghilli suits or under terrain. That makes them really look like sneaky gits...er scouts! I've seen it before and they look excelllent in that manner.

Don't know about rune priests. if you're going Greek theme then something Blood Angelly might work or Dark Angelly for more of a mystic feel, which would be in line with the Greek theme.

Either use regular marines painted how you want, or maybe use a different codex altogether...

Just a thought- have you tried Latin for the name? Example The Panther hearts would be Pantera cor (at leaast thats what google says)
shields of the lion: scuta leo
lion guards: custodes leo

Technically, the Latin phrases would be "scutae leonis" and "custodiae leonis"

Sorry, six years of Latin and all I do is read state mottoes and write smacktalk for my tanks...
