Subject: Is Matt Ward the Uwe Boll of the fluff writing?
Lycaeus Wrex wrote:Oh look, another thread disparaging Matt Ward on Dakka. What a treat! Surely this will result in engaging, intuitive and objective discussion, right?
...Right?!

This man might be able to answer that question in ways that defy the imagination.

It really is terrible that people can start threads that force you to read them even when the title makes it evident that it is something you do not want to read... that is really not fair. Oh wait...

It really is terrible that people continuously make the same stupid thread over and over and over again. There are, as of this moment, 5 threads on the first page of the 40k discussions board about Mat Ward and the GK codex, not to count the dozens of posts about him that find their way into almost every thread.

It's Dakka
It's the internet
waddaya expect?
Look how wonderfully on topic this has kept within the first response.
Who was that that engaged in such an erudite manner?
Dear Uwe Boll
Thank you for the tips on changing motifs beloved of geeks.
Please accept this signed first edition copy of Picklewick Papers as a token of my gratitude.

And these threads trap you... no matter how badly you want to get away from them you are stuck... and required to keep posting.
While repeat threads can be annoying it tends to happen with every popular subject.

My friends and I have grown to appreciate Mr Boll. We sometimes get together and have a few beers while watching one of his movies. The last one was "In the Name of the King", his movies are some of the best comedy out there.

Actually, I think that Matt Ward isn't that bad a writer, really, when you think about it. Granted, he's no Dostoevsky, Lovecraft, or Doyle. I mean, sure, his writing is hyperbolic and strains believability, but this is 40k. You're bitching about believability in a world where humanity is running around killing things in the name of Space Arm Chair Jesus, green fungus men run around with guns being manipulated sometimes by Space Elves, and the good guys run around spitting acid and eating brains.
It's kind of funny because the stuff people whine about the most are the things he writes that break the black/white 40k stereotype.
"Look, there was this situation with BA and Necrons that proved both sides could act reasonably, if only long enough to part ways."
"There was this situation where GK had to do something unspeakably terrible to a bunch of SoB in the name of stopping a greater and more terrible evil at all costs."
"GK are organized into a chapter of Space Marines, while all the other legions are still in existence, completely in a bubble all their own in the Warp." Hey, wait a second, that must mean maybe this chapter thing didn't come from the Ultras, but maybe it was mandated that they write the Codex by the Emprah or perhaps an advisor?
Really though, I think I'm just burnt out on the Ward hate. Every thread has some anti-wardism in it. I mean, it was fun for a while, but it's now about as endearing as the six year old who repeats the same joke over and over again because it's not learned that a joke's only funny the first time it's been told.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, and Uwe Boll is too easy. You should have at least reached for a real hack that hasn't been publicly denounced (for god knows why) like M. Night Charlatan.

M. Night Shaymalamalamadingdong has had his fair due of ire through his increasingly bad movies, peaking with The Last Airbender. He just doesn't get as much flak in the gaming community as Boll because he doesn't make game-related movies.

I have to agree on the Ward-hate.
It's become about as "funny" as the sweaty, balding ponytail guy who showed up at Games Days wearing a formerly white t-shirt(stained yellow under his arms and orange everywhere else) with "WHERE ARE MY SQUATS" on it.
It's so over.

I mean, sure, his writing is hyperbolic and strains believability, but this is 40k.
It is a problem if the author starts breaking the perameters of believability within the fictional setting.
You may argue that he hasn't actually done so. but others do and get annoyed.
It is legitimate to question why the existing paradigms have been broken and replaced.
Good writing would find a way to change things within the setting. It was pointed out on another thread that the BA could simply have withdrawn as a tactical decision rather than for any chivalric reasons that stretch credulity, as an example.
