I guess 'beat' is subjective- and in this case means 'close in point values and disregarding the units actual worth as a counter to the previous'.

Which sort of defeats the usefulness of this as an exercise(i.e. making people think).

no, that is not at all what he is saying, try to pick something that would beat the previously stated but if you don't think it can then keep it to your self

beat means kill the other unit in a game using rules from the current codecies and rulebooks. beating does not mean it costs fewer points than the previous unit, I.E. the response to a land raider redeemer cannot be 5 grots, the grots do cost fewer points but without some kind of upgrade the redeemer would kill them with no chance of the grots fighting back

and to the 'ard boys I say, 5 dark eldar scourges, 4 with splinter cannons one with splinter rifle, (for those who don't know splinter cannons are R36 assault 4 bolters, and splinter rifles are S3 bolters, and scourges are jump infantry)

You didn't post the points, but I guess a Battlewagon W/ Killa Cannon and 2 Big Shootas should do the trick - 160 points

The points lower themselves everytime somebody finds a cheap solution to the previous unit, it's pretty much unavoidable. It doesn't help that idiots keep posting expensive units seemingly and random, of course.

You tend to have to give them a transport or they'll be killed long before getting an opportunity to do their job...
and when they do their job, there's a good chance some of them will die to an exploding vehicle.

So are we to assume that its our turn and the unit is within range to do its thing? Or what? Because all this, "no my unit could be in terrain and you have no gernades so that wouldn't work." Stuff needs to quit. Why not just post a unit regardless of points that's a counter, try to keep it close but don't bash if its not.
