Plasticard and PVC(?) tubes. I've seen them used a lot, and some people use them effectively. Never bought the stuff myself though.

Not much of an answer, but I think that's what they are.

Tubes, sheets, angles, I-beams, H beams, clear and white and textured.

Evergreen and Plastruct are the two biggies in the modelling scene.

Evergreen has the distinctive white and green stands.
Plastruct has the orange and black.

Most decent model shops should sell one of them. Especially if they deal in model railroad at all.

It's also called "styrene sheet" or "styrene tube" etc. "Plasticard" can often give you blank looks in response.

Keep in mind, Garage Sale signs are made out of the same size and come in a few different thicknesses. The tubes, angles, I-beams, and H beams you can get from gale Force Nine, but for the sheets just use the Garage Sale Signs. Way cheaper!

dont forget stairs, and in my area (never seen it anywhere else) metalless model railroad tracks (for storing the rollingstock im guessing)
styrene comes in every imaginable shape and size (almost all models are made from it, it just ends up being grey for some reason that i dont know)

Depending on the thickness you can either cut straight through it with a hobby knife, or score it several times in the same place to cut through it.

i just score it and gently break it along the score line. then sand the edge down with my file

^This.

The way most modelmakers have been doing it for the last few decades. For tubing over a certain size (5-6mm), I use a mitre box and razor saw (same for I-beams or the like).
