Here's a shocker!!

I dont play the game! yup! yep! yes! It's true, I've only really started to paint these wonderfull models, i'm not bound to any type of codex and type of rule, i could paint them all pink with green dots or purple with yellow stripes.

But i dont, i still follow whats allready been painted, UltraMarines, Blood Angels, Dark Angels bla bla bla!

Why do i do it? Because you can be the best at painting a SpaceMarine, you can be great at painting a Ork, but to be the best, should you be able to paint everything?

What ties you to painting your Army? Why do you Paint your Blood Angel RED because it tells you to paint it RED?

Do you paint for the gaming, Or do you Game for the painting?

I paint for the painting! What do you do?

I started painting for the gaming but now it's more painting and gaming for the modelling and converting.

I play:
Imperial Fists - 9000 pts
Tyranids - 1500 pts

GENERATION 9: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.

I don't play a lot of 40k, but I play the RPG's (Dark Heresy, Deathwatch, Rogue Trader etc) so I collect a bit of everything, paint a bit of everything and do a lot of converting.

My thought on the Codex chapters is they should be painted in Codex colors. If you want yellow marines with purple tiger stripes, that's A-OK because nothing is stopping you from creating your own chapter. I don't paint Blood Angels red because I don't like Codex Chapters and don't paint them! But if I did, they'd be red.

For instance, an Orange Ultramarine...while you could do it...would be considered improper and would garner you some pitying looks from your peers. But if you want Pink Marines and painted Hello Kitty on their shoulderpads, that's absolutely fine (and has been done, actually...).

I paint for the stress relief. That's right I said stress relief. I have only just started to get into the game. And I picked the most ornate army to paint, Grey Knights. Why? well I like the medevil look of them.

So I paint to game. I ticks me off sometimes to watch a game to learn it and both sides of the tables armies are not painted or even primed.

For me I refuse to play until my army is fully painted.

I´m yet to play a "real" game of 40k.

But I do love the painting/modelling aspect of the hobby!

I've always been more in the "Hobby" camp versus the "Gaming" camp. Painting miniatures doesn't require me to remember varied, endless and ever-changing rule systems

I've been into hobbying on and off for about 15 years and most of that time has been painting and modelling as I enjoy this side more, particularly GS I just tried it out and I'm hooked. I only played my first game of 40k about 6 months ago! I quite enjoyed it but my FLGS manager decided that pummeling me into the ground for my tutorial games was a great idea. In a way it has put me off because he was so caught up in winning rather than teaching me the game, I still haven't got a clue what some of the rules are and I have gone back to painting again.

Purely painting & modelling, I've never had a game and wouldn't have the first idea about rules and what makes a decent side. The idea of me having to paint a certain squad/model to make up a side fills me with boredom, worse if it was something I didn't particularly like.

I paint my Blood Angels red because they have always been the most aesthetically pleasing Space Marine to look at personally. They were my first love and first foray into wargaming. So I honor them by adhering pretty closely to the BA codex. I paint because I love to paint. Gaming is a distant second for me. I have painted on and off for over 10 years now and during that stretch can count the number of games ive played on both hands. While my next 4 army's in production will not follow any color schemes from their respective codices, The ability to be creative and imaginative with your color schemes appeals to me as well.

There is something inherently ass-backwards about this statement.

I know a few people who paint more than they game, and far too many who game without painting at all. Painting and modeling is tied with the fun of just hanging out with my buddies and rolling some dice. I spend more time painting though, since I'm trying to get as good as I can get. Painting is also my "zen" activity that keeps me relaxed. I was just at a tournament yesterday and it shamed me how many armies were just bare plastic and metal. Conversely, there was a gorgeous Eldar army all painted up in the early 90's 'Eavy Metal style that was really fun to fight against (and pound into the ground with artillery )

I am first and foremost a painting guy, but I wouldn't be here if it weren't for the gaming. I think that sums it up best.

I like to play with good looking models. Therefore I paint, model and play. I paint them whatever colour I feel like and just make my own army for it.

I like both the painting and gaming equally.

I do more painting then gaming beacuse thats what I do after work to chill out. I tend to get one game in a week, unless more of my mates are in town.

I take the painting side seriously. Because of this alot of my army is unpainted. I only get a couple of models for my army done a month because I want my army to look the best I can make it. I would rather take my time and have a really nicely painted army, painted to the best of my abilities.

I also have some other models that I am taking longer over.

for me though in a sense the two things are separate. I don't play in an enviroment that you have to have painted army. My mates don't complain if I use unpainted models and I don't either. I feel that you need a painted army to have a good game. But I feel that having painted armies will cirtainly add to the overall experiance. I look forward to the time that my army is painted, but thats a long way off. And as I have said i'm no hurry.

And i thought it was only me on these forums who doesn't play the game. Iv'e never played a game, not that i don't want to. I quite like the idea of playing but have no one to play with *violin plays*. At the rate i am painting my AOBR set it is going to take me ages to get the lot painted.
On a side note has anyone played a game on their own? Sounds a bit sad but i'm condsidering it just so i get the rules in my head.

Sixteen years into the hobby and i've only 'played' 4 games and I use that term loosely, the games took about 8 hours as I am trying to learn how to play, I am definitely into the collecting and painting side of the hobby, I just love it, if I want to paint something else i jsut start to collect another 'army' so yep, I paint to well....paint

I am far more into the painting/modeling,crafting themed Armies aspect of 40k than "gaming".
I play perhaps twice a month, but am constantly working on concepts and configurations that I feel best represent a given theme for my forces.
I'm always much more satisfied with the creation of a cool looking DP or Looted Vehicle or Company Command Squad than I am with winning a game.

I havent' played a game of 40K in 5 years. Even then, it was just a few times. Since I live in the boonies, 40K gamers out here are rare as hen's teeth. Now and then I run a game of 'ol Space Crusade for fun with my kids. I like playing it because the rules are easy for me to remember....

Like others here, I paint as a stress reliever, as well for the enjoyment. I'm too easy going to be the competitive type. I love making conversions--unfortuntely, they would either be too point costly or fail to meet the codex to field on a game table. I don't find it very interesting making army lists and counting points. I guess that makes me a heretic

I do like the fun of playing, making jokes about the dice outcomes and such. What I really dig is seeing a well painted army on the table displayed in all its glory like a epic diorama. The pagentry of the thing, you know?

I have been painting and collecting the miniatures for 2 years now and only played about 2 introductory games with less than 200 pts (sad I know). I enjoy the painting and collecting much more than the game, especially that I can paint my SM any color I want instead of following a Codex (which I dont even own). Anyways I barely know what my models are called other than Space Marines, there are too many to distinguish, different weapons, armors, helmets, battlesuits, shields etc.....

I have 2 Codex's 1 for Orks and 1 for SM as a reference, at the moment i have Orks, SM, Eldar, Dark Eldar, Tau and now Grey Knights, i'm abit confused now who to paint.

I've been doing a few orks and thats all i've had time for as i work full time.

So having the freedom to paint what ever can get on top of you at times.

I'm thinking of sticking to 1 for the time being, but what 1? The choice is abit tricky!
