I'd say Emperor's Children are the way to go then...maybe. Nothing still quite jumping out at you though, so you may not want to commit yet. Any play-style appeal to you? Close combat? Shootiness? Speed? Tough?

Are you more interested in fluff or playing to win? A heavy Emp children list will have a harder time than even a fluffy guard list. Chaos didn't get a good book, and it hasn't for the most part aged well. That being said, if you go with chaos, you can build good lists with Emp children, but it won't have as many units of the cult marines as you probably would want. Chaos is the marine equivalent of the eldar playstyle: Over priced specialists, and FOC traffic jams (all the good choices tend to be in the same FOC slots)n

Yeah, they're pretty good. Bloody expensive to make an army though.

I would belay that idea. Just starting out and you are going to try and put together over 80 figures? You will stall and never get them put together, or painted. I couldn't do that. I understand you really want to get playing, but start off slow. Plus, if you throw down all that money, and decide after the 4th cadian that you don't like flak armor, then what? I would suggest getting a command squad box and another cadian box for starters. Put them together, paint em up, maybe have a skirmish or two. Then if you still like them, go hog wild.

yes i understand that... but i have played an mech guard army with basically chimeras and leman russ i had about 750 pts.. wasnt a fan of mech guard but i love the look of guard ssoososososo much... wat my concern i want to find an army that i wont get bored of becuz i played my crons for about 1 year and a half and got bored..... i played orks for about 3 months and found that the become quite repeatitive.. i want guard because of the unit variability..... e.c. dont have much unit selection similar to cronz when it comes to that factor. but pink is amazing haha

Try playing both armies before you buy either. There are a few ways to do this:

1) Borrow an army. If an FLGS knows you want to buy stuff, they will probably let you use one of those forces if they have them.

2) Play Vassal. You can play any race and any configuration. It's free on the interwebz- do some Google to find the bits you need.

3) Proxy. Print paper markers that represent the various troops you want to try out.

Play a half-dozen games. See what you think. THEN buy.

For a new player, emperors children is your best bet. You can always get guard later, after you've learned more about the game and what exactly you want out of it.
