Hi, I'm trying to create my army (tau). I've heard, that I need to have a really many crisis (about 12). That is true? One crisis costs $22,25 (12 crisis=$267). I do not hide, that I don't have these 267$. I can buy this crisises for time to time, but I cant buy it all an once.

You Make Da Call is for rules questions. Yours seems more appropriate for Tactics or General Discussion.

As for your question, the strength of Tau is in the Crisis Suits. You don't need to spam them, but if you want to make the "best" Tau army, then you do.

Yes, they're expensive, but so are most things in this hobby.

You Make Da Call is for questions about the rules.

I'm going to move this post to the Tactics forum, because it's asking about the tactical importance of a particular unit, and army construction in general.

Once you get to the point of writing up an entire army list and asking for feedback and criticism on it, you'll want to post that in the Army Lists forum.

I would actually say 10 crisis suits per an army, but yes, Crisis suits are pretty much the strongest point of the Tau codex, and they are expensive.

I buy them with a 20% discount... so it isn't as hard on me.

Yes you may need that many eventually, however while starting off you really only need about 3. You get one in the battleforce (which you should buy), and should get like 2 more. That will give you a solid army to start with.

Yes, the battleforce is a great buy!

It starts your with 2 troop choices, a tank, and some other nice things (and some not so nice).

You effectively getting about $150 of stuff for $90.

You'll need a crisis battlesuit commander as well if you want a legal army.

You don't need battlesuits, it's just they hold most of your firepower.

Your broadsides and to a lesser degree hammerheads are your tank killers.

Piranahas can kill tanks and infantry well, depending on their main weapon.

Beyond that, the army has str 5 weapons up the wazooo.

This is where the battlesuits come in. Need long range missles? Need plasma? Need flamers? Need extra antitank (melta) ect, ect.

You can't play tau like guard persay, your infantry aren't numerous enough to pump enough shots and your heavy support fills up very, very fast. Battlesuits are the core of the army.

I would say the size of your army is going to be the main determining factor in how many crisis suits you carry. If its only 1000-1500 then just 1 to 2 teams could easily work. Its going to be a completly different set of tactics with your army if you only have 1-2 teams in it. If you have a 1500 point army you could always take a Shasel and add what few crisis suits you have as his body guard. In fact that wouldnt be terrible at 1850. As said before tho crisis suit spamming is not mandatory unless thats the tactic your going for and you are making a big army. So it really all depends on what you want to do. Hope this helps, im in the same pickle you are lol

I will...never be a memory

For several years of 4th edition, I managed a 70% Win ratio with only 5 Crisis Suits, 2 Railheads and a XV88 team of 3 (+ the usual kroot & FWs).

Tau life is harder in 5e, hampering jsj for XV8s as Area Terrain no longer blocks LoS, limiting the places suits can hide. Meaning, a ML or LasCan shot gives the suit a 50-50 chance of getting Instant Deathed.

For now, I'd kick back and wait for the new 'dex rumored for the end of the year.

The recent FAQ didn't do much to entice me back into the Greater Good.

Currently I'm all into the BDSM, err, I mean, Dark Eldar.

Pah! Brother erekose, I find your lack of faith... disturbing.

We must be with Tau as Dashofpepper was with Dark Eldar! Using an out-dated codex and wrecking imperial scum and other xenos!

(I still think you're an awesome Tau player )
