Scarab with a Cracked Shell

The idea is to create a cost effective counter to the big nasties, basically the ones that cant fly. Im talking Hydras, Hellpits, Giants, Sphinxes, Stegadons, Treemen, etc.
Beside Hellcannons doing D6 wounds under the hole, magic and just beating them viciously with blocks of Warriors or Knights, i was looking at either a Lord or Exalted Hero to at least provide a good show against most of these beasties. Items to consider are:
-Disc or Juggernaught (with associated marks). The Disc provides a bit more speed and is cheaper than the Jugger, but also adds the extra endurance with the mark. The Jugger however bumps up the armour save heaps, provides a few extra attacks and MR (1).
-Hellfire Sword. Flaming and multiple wounds is pretty good, but at a 75 pt cost and only S5.
-Daemonsword. With the off chance of doing wounds to yourself, its damage output can be enough to wipe through alot. Still 75 pts though.
-Glaive of Putrefication. It doesnt provide much bonuses but if the enemy model is wounded they become Strength and Toughness 2 at the end of that combat round. That means that they become ALOT less scary for the next round and with multiple S5 attacks you should be able to finish it off with ease. Also cheap at 25 pts.
-Talisman of Preservation. A 4+ ward plus a boosted armour save from either mount provides a nice little tank. This means that you can survive for much longer against these beasties.
-Chaos Runesword. This on a Chaos Lord can be pretty nasty. Its the best all rounder as it makes him WS 9 (So hydras, hellpits and stegs hit on 5s), S6 which is enough to wound most beasties on 4s or 5s and an extra attack. 50 pts isnt that bad either.
-Flail or Halberd. A bit of mundane equipment never hurts. It also frees up points for increased durability.
-Rapier of Ecstasy and Sword of Change. Both these items are nice but generally the tests will be taken on a 6. However not that bad when combined with a Lore of Shadow debuff. Still risky and unreliable.
I think it really comes down to what your fighting. Hellfire Sword is good against Treemen, Hydras and Hellpits. But average against everything else for its points cost and you need a Lord to wield it. My original idea was a Hero with MoK, Jugger, Halberd, Talisman of Preservation and a Charmed Shield. 229 points with 5 S6 attacks a handful of Jugger attacks, immune to thunderstomp, thats really hard to kill.
Give us your thoughts!!!

I was jsut actually thinking about that because till september all my warriors are going to be facing is bretonians and wood elves and those tree men are kind of making me worry.

I suppose if you are dead set on using a character for the job, Glaive, Disk and Talisman of 4+ ward are your best bets. Pop a shield on the lord, and you have a 2+/3++ save, and as you said once you sneak one wound through the target is going to cry at t2.
Alternately, a few Level 1-2 Tizz sorcs with Flickering fire are a LOT cheaper, and d6+1 for hits and Str flaming attacks will drop most monsters pretty quickly. Plus if they are level 2 the other Tizz spells are kind of nice. Pop them on a disk and flit about shooting them down. After the monsters are down, all those magic missile shots are good vs small units, war machines and softening up everything else, as well as chasing down fleeing units.
Of the two options there, I would probably opt for the sorcs, as I like my lords to cleave through rank and file and characters, not giant scary monsters. Without cheap flaming weapons there isn't really much recommending the lords for the job. Warrior Bane isn't too bad for 5 points, as the magical aspect blows through the Woody type wards and losing an attack per wound is ok, but eh, can't get too excited about that, so I would still rock the sorcs for greater flexibility.
I would still run 18 warriors with halberds and a flaming banner though, just to be safe

For monster hunting definatly take a potion of strength if you can fit it. That way you'll have a better chance of causing a wound in the first (and critical) round of combat with your glaive. Also a sorc with lore of fire or the ring with the bound fire spell could help out.

I think I would keep Lore of Tizz instead of Fire, though the ring might not be bad. The MoT is so handy all around, and the flaming sig spell does the trick well enough, with the other spells offering better support to the rest of the army after that monster is a smoking corpse.

I totally forgot the first spell from the tizz lore counted as flaming.
