My friend and I were having a discussion about what would constitute as the final battle for 40k. Assuming it would have to be on Terra, what armies/races would be in play, would any abstain from the fight and where would allegiances ambiguous (i.e Tau and Eldar) lie? Would the Void Dragon show and what would do for the Necrons or Mankind? Would we see the Unknown Primarchs and would the missing Primarchs return? Can and will the Emperor or some surrogate form come back? Horus? The Gods themselves?

Any speculation would be appreciated.

There will never be any final battle cause this is never ending war.....

But if I can guess.... I would say that things will get a lot messier at the end. I have posted my idea here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/359026.page

Everone that is still alive goes to the Sol system and fight until everyone else is dead.
All the primarchs that can, wake up or return. Big E comes back.
The C'tan wake up and start fighting with each other/other people
The Eldar gods rock up and start breaking heads.
The Orks arrive in full force.
All the daemon primarchs rock up as well.
Tau aren't there because they can't get there...
The Tyranids all arrive and fight everyone.
Essentially they have a massive battle, a battle so big it extends for billions of miles.

The Emperor is reborn and brings the IoM to a new golden age. All races fall before the mighty hammer of the Emperor.

Then the main tyranid fleet arrives with trillions upon trillions of bugs. They push the IoM back to the Sol system and are met with fierce resistance as they fight for their birth place. Then after the Swarmlords many experiences meets the Emperor. The two fight for what seems like hours before the swarmlord falls. Then when it seems that the Tyranids can be pushed out, the swarmlord is reborn and wins because he learned from his first failure and the IoM in finally defeated and the Tyranid race moves on leaving the Milky way a lifeless star cluster.

The Golden Throne fails. The Emperor dies. Many predict his return, false cults take root all over the galaxy, but there is a silence in the warp. As effective communication and faster than light travel is lost, more and more worlds succeed. Brutal wars of supremacy obliterate whole sectors of once Imperial space. The Space Marine chapters, having lost their final link to the Imperium, act with total autonomy, carving their own fiefdoms from the galaxy. Shattered, broken, and alone, mankind starts to be consumed by their enemies. What can one planet do against an Ork waaagh? How can a single chapter of Marines hold off an entire hive-fleet? Meanwhile, the Eldar, forever descending into their own arrogance wither. Without the blunt instrument of mankind to manipulate as they see fit, more and more of their kind die. Reports of Eldar activity become fewer and fewer. Eventually, they just stop. The once proud race retreats to the webway, never to return to the material realm. Slowly but surely, Chaos claims its due. One thousand years of anarchy and chaos pass. Finally, Terra stands alone. The last, sputtering remnant of mankind. A flickering candle in the void, ready to go out. And slowly, inexorably, their enemies close in.

All races bar the Tau will be involved in the Final Battle (if there ever is one). Why not Tau? Because they're useless and weak and can be steamrolled by any other race with sufficient force, which they all have in ample amounts.

First thing to happen will likely be the failing of the Emperor. He may not die, just become so weak as to not broadcast his signal through space. Without communication the Imperium will crumble. The Astonomican will try in vain to broadcast their singal but will eventually fail. Sure, planets can communicate but they cant join up easily. Space Marines will try their best to fight offf hordes of Orks, Necrons and Tyranids but they will fail and retreat back to major population centres. Traitors and Warlords will carve their own turf. The Inquistion will mobilize all resources at their disposal to try and keep their fracturing empire from subcumbing. Only the Grey Knights will be able to navigate through the turmoil, but they will be hard pressed to do their duty, retreating to Terra for what they know will come. The Mechanicum will unleash forbidden technologies for their own preservation.

The Four Chaos powers will unite all their followers under a single Champion. Abbadon the Despoiler. Raised to Primarch levels or power, he will lead his final Black Crusade, joined by each Legion and Daemon Primarch. He will smash through the Cadian Gate and lead a trumphant fleet larger than any seen before and strike for Terra. The veil between Worlds will thin, and rents will appear creating new regions of Warp space. Daemons will join traitor worlds creating a fractured Imperium where valiant Imperial Guard and Space Marine Chapters hold out against insurmountable odds.

The Necrons will rise from their Tomb Worlds, united under the remaining C'tan. A new Red Harvest will begin, and war will reign across the galaxy as they seek to purge all life for sould for their masters. The Eldar will unite also, seeing their ancient enemy return. The Phoenix Lords will return for the Ranna'Dandra, and the Craftworlds will come together along with their Exodite cousins for a final battle with their eternal foe, led by the true Avatar of Khaine, once all pieces that were once expelled from the Warp are brought together once again. He will face his nemesis, The Nightbringer, and banish ones more, but his power will diminish and the last of the great pantheon will die.
The Dark Eldar will launch on a galaxy wide slave run, hoping to gather enough to survive the coming Cataclysm. The Eldar will battle across the Stars utilizing forbidden sorcery unleashed by the Black Library, but to no avail, their diwindling power cannot contain the Necrons and the powers unleashed by the Warp. When all their power is gone, and all the Eladar are dead, Ynnead will awake and battle the Dark Prince of Pleasure, along with the The Laughing God and claim final victory for the Eldar. His power will be spent, and the Eldar will cease to be.

Yarrick will return to Armageddon so see off the last great Waaagh! of Thrakka and eventually, Armageddon will fall. Thrakka will stand victotious amongst the chaos. All across the galaxy, the Orkish Waagh!s will carve out their own empires, fighting with anyone they find.

On the Eastern Fringe, a new Hive Fleet will arrive, one many times bigger than any other before. It will sweep away any opposition before it, scouring entire systems of life in a systematic war of devourment. With no light from the Astronomican to guide them, they will consume all before them.

Chaos will land on Terra and a new battle will begin, many times more catastrophic than Horus's campaign. The Traitor Legions will return to the site of their humiliation and take their revenge. The Primarchs will duel together in a last battle, brother against brother, but the loyal sons will be out-done by their brethren, swelled by sorceries and Warp magic. A titanic battle will erupt across Terra, once more, Astartes will fight Astartes, as the First Founding and their succesors will battle their ancient foes. The Grey Knights will unite with their true brothers, the Custodian Guard, and stand togehter, in their element against their Daemonic enemies. Countless Imperial Guard and titans will make war with traitors and Daemons in the ruins of Terra's Mega Hives. Even the combined might of the AStartes, Grey Knights and the Custodians will not be enough to hold back the combined might of the Chaos Pantheon. Like 10,000 years before, the Blood Angels will once again hold the Eternity Gate as their allies withdraw behind the walls of The Palace. This time, there will be no awaiting Battle Barge, no Emperor to battle Abaddon. Eventually, the Gate will open and the day will be thought lost. Addadon himself will lead the final assault, breaking any barrier before him, matching any Primarch or Chapter Mastrer before him. He will come to stand before the Emperors near lifeless body. Before he can land the final deathblow, one stand between him and his final Revenge. As he had predicted, hundreds of years before, Dante, last Chapter Master of the Blood Angels, will come to stand between his Emperor and the Darkness. With the Terminus Decree in his hand, only Dante can save, or destroy the Imperium. He will duel Abaddon in both the physical realm and the Warp. Will Dante hold true to his sworn duty, or has his long life of war taken its toll on his fortitude?

Tyranid fanboy much?
Mate the Emperor would oblterate the Swarmlord completely. Nothing would be left of the Swarmlord not even the ability to reincarnate. I highly doubt your theory.

If a simple human in power armor can kill a hive tyrant in close combat (And she did), it's highly doubtful that the swarmlord could kill the Emperor.

For the MEchanicus... there'd likely be another split, between those siding with the C'tan (namely, the Void Dragon) and those siding with the Omnissiah (IE, the Emperor).

Far as I see, all signs point to the Imperium being on a hiding for nothing, but faith in the Emperor is an admiriable trait in a Battle Brother.

Not sure. Lost track a while ago.

The Emperor and all his surviving Loyalist Primarchs return. They reunite the galaxy under the now-living Emperor of Mankind. The Tau are destroyed in the process, the Eldar are driven into the Warp.

The Tyranids continue their onslaught against the galaxy but are slowly but surely pushed back until they are destroyed.

The Necrons and their C'Tan fully awaken and a new great war begins. The Mechanicus divides between the Void Dragon and the Omnissiah. Eventually, the Imperium wins, but at a great cost.

In such a weakened state, the Forces of Chaos begins to strike more and more at the Imperium. Finally, one more Black Crusade, led by Abaddon and all the Daemon Primarchs with every force at their disposal, lead one great charge to Terra. The Final Battle is fought once again at the gates of the Imperial Palace.

In the end....... only Games Workshop knows

The Orks are just too fractured and separated across the galaxy to ever unite for a big Waaaagh! IMO. Plus, who would lead them? There are so many Ork Warbosses, I don't think the top ones would ever unite under a single one, it'd have to be like the Ork Emperor, not really an Ork, something more. Humanity needed the Emperor to unite them, the Orks are even more fractious, it'd have to be supremely powerful to rule over them all.

They won't abandon the Emperor. Whatever force brings about the end of the IoM will certainly fight and destroy all of those if they get to him. Sanguinus prothesised that one golden warrior would stand between the Emperor and the Darkness. Many interpreted this as Sanguinus on Horus's ship. Dante however believes he is this warrior, and that a final battle is coming, where he will defend his Emperor to the last, when all others have failed.

That maybe what the all strive for, but it's well known that Orks will fight each other quite easily when there is no other enemy around. Aside from Chaos, they are the least unified force in 40k. In the past, they have been known to unite under a particularly powerful Warboss, but they soon fracture when there's not a constant supply of enemies before them. It's rare that such a horde even as large as the Waaagh! Thraka emerges, let alone a force encompassing the entire Orkish race. Thraka is known to be one of the most intelligent and ruthless Warbosses ever encountered. His horde is as vast as to nearly conquer Armageddon. What kind of Ork would be able to firstly, subjugate Thraka himself, then all the other bosses. Secondly, somehow gather a race that numbers in the countless billions from across a galaxy. Thirdly, how would he coordinate such a force? If they moved as a whole, how would they do it in a timely manner? How would he command a force so that the inevitable stragglers wouldn't break up and leave?
