I just realised how much many i spent on paints over the years and its kinda annoying when some run out , considering my A-hole bird likes to knock them over >:U
Plus i have to restock my chaos black and blood red qutie alot , i have payed about £52 .

Anyone else felt they are being 'ripped' off and how much have you spent on paints ?

No, they are reasonably priced for their properties.

If you want to complain about the modeling supplies side of GW, level your gaze at brushes and knives.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Paint prices are perhaps the most outrageous thing ever in the history of the world.

Especially when they're making the pots smaller.

After painting 1250 points worth of Orks (80 or so models), I've only had to replace my Black and Boltgun Metal.

Vallejo Game Color > GW paint. Don't buy GW paint that are not Washes IMO.

I dunno what the prices for VGC are in England, but they *should* be cheaper than GW paint.

They aren't too badly priced, for the hobby. Look at some alternatives: Vallejo, and reaper paints have prices about the same. Now if you want to save money, go to an art supply store and buy some acrylic paints in larger sizes. To get certain colors, you might need to mix, but if you don't like doing that, you can at least save money on the basic black, whites, and primary and secondary colors. The less common colors, like metalics or detail colors, you can still get from GW or whomever.

GW charges a lil' too much for many many things. The Paints definitely aren't the same value for money that they once were but their not the worst thing at GW, that's probably the aforementioned brushes if not some of the more outrageously priced models

Stop painting straight out of the pot, would be the obvious answer there

Has the additional benefit of stopping your paints from drying out so fast.

+1 for this.

Airbrushes are usually heavy on paint use because so much gets wasted and you have to clean the airbrush afterwards.

GW paints are more expensive than their competitors, there's nothing wrong with them as such, you just don't get as much for your money. I've tended to buy them when there's no alternative available locally but then again I only go though a few main colours like black, white, dark red and brown, most paints last years and years.

I always preferred GW paints when they were in the taller hexagonal pots with white lids. They changed to something more like the current smaller pots with black screw cap lids that were a total disaster, and then they got the flip top lids back again thank god. But the main issue when they went away from those with the white lids was that they changed paint supplier. Goblin Green was never the same after that. These older paints are currently under the brand 'Coat D'arms'

Vallejo are good but I've found them to be a bit runny on occasion, I generally use them for serious modelling because their range of military colours like olive drab and german grey are great.

Probably not actually legal that.... But good idea anyway.

I liked how they put the price up of glue recently (well at some point in the last year) while making the pot smaller. And there glue isn't even that wonderful.

GW paints are pretty good quality for paints. I've paid more for paints before (namely, 20 bucks for a tube about 1.5 size of the GW's pot. Wasn't my choice, school's manditory brand). My focus on costs are turned more towards things that should blatantly be cheaper, like the models.

I use AC Moore paints, for $.35 a pop. It needs to be thinned a LOT, and requires a lot of coats to get decent coverage (Sounds contradictory, I know, but its either really thick or dry translucent, so I'd rather do extra coats). it works great for everything but mettalics, which I get from Army Painter (mental Note, I need more Armor)

All in all I don't mind the price at present. Are they still £2.20 a pot?

They are a tad more expensive than Humbrol Acrylics and Revell Aqua.
Citadel paints are on a par and in some cases (metallics especially) they are superior imho.

Have not tried Vallejo paints as yet.

The Citadel scatter is a joke.
Go to a model shop/model train shop and get the same amount in a bag for a quid.

My favourite is the range that I see in Hobbycraft near the FoW stuff, and they have dead twigs for something daft like a fiver. Also seen bags for similar amounts with some pebbles in

Simple colours like black, red, white and the like are best bought elsewhere as you can easily find more paint for less and often its of equal or better quality.

I am a fan of the GW metallic colours though.

Proprietary paints/tools/models are always going to be expensive. I usually just assume that the extra you're paying is for convenience. Any self-respecting gaming store that carries citadel models is going to carry citadel paint. The other, cheaper stuff you have to go on a hunt for.

I use much less paint with an airbrush than with a standard paint brush. While it may take two or three coats of GW paint to get a good finish on a model with a brush (unless you're using a q-tip to paint with), I can cover the same figure with just one pass of an airbrush. I can control the amount of 'waste' by controlling the width of the spray and the amount of time I press and hold the 'trigger' of my airbrush. It's not like using a spray can.

Model Air paints by Vallejo are specifically made to be used with an airbrush right from the bottle. I temper mine even further to get the flow I'm more comfortable with.

Vallejo paints use far more pigment and are much less runny than GW paints. If you're getting runny Vallejo paints you might need to mix or shake them more as they tend to separate due to the amount of pigment in them.

That said, I use GW washes exclusively and 'inks' as well.

Tha's definitely not been my experience.

Vallejo's white and greys tend to be a similar consistency to GW paint. Pretty much everything else I've used has been not as thick as GW paint, putting it at a better consistency for using straight out of the bottle (those that weren't just too watery to actually use, which thankfully has only been a couple so far), where GW paints generally need to be watered down a little for the best results.
