I am wondering, if you assualt a dreadnoughts rear and it's immobilzed would that make it so you use the rear AV instead of the front value?

It's always the front armour if i remember correctly, but once immobilized your grenades stop needing a 6 to hit and go off WS instead.

Not terribly logical, but hey, this is 40K

in assault you always hit a dreads front armor until you immobilize it, then you hit rear.

The above is incorrect.

"Models hitting a walker in Close Combat always roll for penetration against its front armor" P.73

"Grenades and melta-bombs can be used against a walker. a model will only score a hit with a grenade against a walker on the roll of a 6. However If a walker is already stunned or immobilised at the start of the assault phase, the attackers roll to hit based on the normal weapon skill comparison."P.73

Used to be rear armor in old edition when immobilized and you maneuvered to charge the rear armour IIRC.

Yep. In 3rd you attacked whatever arc you were facing, but non-immobilized Dreads could pivot to face whichever way they wanted at the end of each round of combat. I would frequently charge a warlock with witchblade leading a squad of storm guardians into the rear of a dreadnought. though if i didn't kill him the first round, he'd turn to face the warlock.
