Hey,

This scenario came up in ard boys yesterday. I received a challenge and refused because I knew Korhil would probably die to the Ogre general. And I wanted him alive so I could retain his stubborn. He was pushed to the back of the unit and my opponent was saying he couldn't confer stubborn if he refused a challenge. However, I said he could because the BRB only says he can't fight or confer his leadership on the unit. It says nothing about special rules. We ended up playing it like I thought. But I told him I'd post here to see what others say.
What say ye?

DAH

I think George Orwell was unknowingly describing 40K.

While I dislike the rule, I believe you played it correctly.

I agree with Matt, you did play it correctly, you keep your stubborn.

You only can't use the character's leadership. Other things(like BSBs and special rules) still effect the unit.

Also I still get hatred from priests, effects of magic items or banners... in effect, everything but their attacks and leadership. This is an utterly stupid, broken rule, but since they set the precedent for this with the skaven book, it makes sense they gave it to everyone else.

Yeah imo, if you refuse a challenge, you should lose any magic items, the bsb reroll (who is inspired by the BSB running to the back rank), all leadership, any special rules that the unit gives....

There is almost no point of challenging after smushing the champ... It actually helps the BSB to be sent to the back...

My opponent had similar feelings at 'Ard Boyz, but the rules are written as they are and as such Korhil was able to make the PG unit stubborn from the back ranks. It saved me in one round of combat.

But I do understand the thoughts behind all of the points made.

i have two questions that came up the other day;

1) if i refuse a challenge and my character moves to the back rank, does he have to move to the front rank in subsequent rounds of combat? i have heard yes and no but i can't find the rule.

2) if he doesn't have to move to the front, can i use his leadership in later rounds of combat? it only says his leadership cannot be used that turn.

1) No. Only deployment requires you to be in the front rank
2) Looks like it.
