Hi everyone,

I'm normally a 40k player but I am a fantasy nerd at heart so I've decided to branch out to WHFB. My only problem is we have almost no Fantasy players nearby and I dont know what army to start. I'm thinking High Elves because of the IoB starter...but I'm not sure. Where is a good place to read the pros and cons of every race? Or, do you have any suggestions? I'd like to stay away from horde armies.

Thanks!

ASFAIK you can't win without a couple solid blocks of infantry.

Ignoring the cost, what armies are you interested in?

Well, at this point I like the elves and the undead. So I guess tthats WE, DE, HE, UK, and VC. Leaning more towards VC and DE I think.

I like all things elves as well and the High Elves are no exception. I think they are very fun to play and the IoB makes it pretty easy to get some great models. Just find someone who wants to play Skaven and split the cost.

My major concern is how they play. Are they highly specialized in any one arena?

I don't play HE, but from what I have seen they offer some of everything. They have good magic, can hit hard in melee, and have a few descent ranged units. The only thing they don't really offer is tough units.

Go DE man, they are not as overplayed as HE with the new IoB set. Repeater Crossbowmen are awesome good BS lots of shooting and they can fight as well. And hydra love, they are awesome

You might be able to find some information here on dakka or check the forums as this website: http://www.druchii.net/ Librarium is also a good choice for some advice: http://www.librarium-online.com/forums/dark-elves/ I think it's safe to get the army book and maybe the battalion it does have a lot of models. However most battalions are kind of useless alone as the game has moved to big blocks of units. My recommendation is start off with like a 1k army, paint it up and then go from there. Be aware though the Dark Elves are an older model line, most special choices are metal, which means that 5 guys will run you $20-$30, but you might be able to look around and convert some guys. Here a link to a starter 1k list here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/318369.page#1962565 as you can see a battalion would make up the majority of most things listed. You might be able to buy more repeater crossbows on ebay or the trade forums here to give to your shield warriors so you can get the 2 units of 14. So if you buy repeaters you would have:
2 units of 14 Repeater Crossbowmen
20 Corsairs
5 Cold One Knights
All you would need is a sorceress and I would include a hydra, it may not be that "friendly" but 1k games aren't all that serious, when you start putting 2 in at 1.5k then you become TFG
