I'm just trying to nip this argument in the bud, my brother is quite the rules Nazi

According to my understanding, when declaring heroic intervention you simply need to declare the intention to charge, not declare your target. Therefore by simply declaring you intend to use the ability should more than one target present itself you could choose who to assault after the scatter dice are rolled.

Thoughts, opinions, and debate is welcome.

I do in my BA because they only scatter 1D6 so Intervention usually works. But to the OP, no you don't have to declare your target only your intention to use the ability.

When you Deepstrike you say I am using Heroic intervention. The reason is you cant shot if you say it.

My friend used them for awhile. They were ok only cause they can charge on the deep strike.

It's pretty obvious that people use them. What an odd statement.

They're in the codex and you can use them. They may not be the most competitive choice but the competitiveness of a unit does not dictate whether or not people use it. Hell, I know someone who uses them without Jump Packs.

They're much better in BA than in SM, but even the SM versions can be a lot of fun in friendly games, which given the OP, is clearly the case.

I prefer to use Sanguinary guard over vanguards simply because it's more bang for your buck point for point. However I recently was given some, and I thought they might be useful on distrupting heavy support I.e devastators or artillery. The problem with sg is that they fill an elites choice slot unless you field Dante so if you don't have enough points to choose from they pretty much lose usefulness on low point battles.

As noted, nothing in the Heroic Intervention rule requires you to declare a given unit the target of your assault. I double-checked both my BA and SM codices just to make sure GW didn't change the wording between them.

You just have to declare the HI, because doing so means you can't shoot or Run that turn. If they do land in assault range of multiple units, they're perfectly free to assault whichever unit/s they like, subject to the usual assault rules.

Heroic intervention allows you to assault after deep striking, with some restriction on shooting, I think. If the rule doesn't state anything about being required to declare a charge... then you don't have to.
