Hey guys,

Just flipping through the codex in an attempt to try differentiate a Chaos army from a vanilla SM one and I see the entry for Lesser Daemons...

Err, what is the point in them? Barring an extra attack and the fearless rule, are they just CSM with no ranged capability? I get that they're cheaper and can deep strike in... only to get shot for a turn before they go into assault?

A Greater Daemon, however.... oooooh baby

i also fail to the point of them in a game winning sense. But since they and the S.G.D are not aligned to any god then you can go nutz converting some. I plan on converting some cyborg daemons to tag along with iron warriors. So it would seem the daemons are more targetted towards painters / converters than the win at all costs gamer. Same can also be said about chaos spawn.

Well they're cheap, they don't take up space on the FOC, they can assault straight out of Deep Strike and, if you have an Icon, they don't scatter...

They can assault the turn they arrive. If you're already up in the enemy's front lines when they show up, dropping Daemons can add some nice disruption to the enemy ranks.

That said, it's still usually more worthwhile to buy more marines than daemons.

In the grim darkness of the far future, there are only rules disputes.

They can DS, they don't count against FOC, and IIRC, they are also scoring. Good way to contest/steal a far flung objective.

You can only DS them in range of an Icon.

GW tries to make the new codex not make your models unusable, and a lot of people had demons because in the old codex they were awesome.

Although my poor IW bassie has been sad for a while.

They are cheap scoring units. They can also tie up melee units with power weapons far more effectively than normal CSM units can.

They also have exactly the same number of attacks, in effect, as the CSM has 2 CCW.

They provide weight of assault without having a fixed position. They're vector of attack is only limited to anywhere else you have any guys. This is a pretty damn big deal: instant mobility.

The same thing makes that good at swooping up objectives.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Because when CSM was realesed there was no deamons 'dex. This entry was so there was use for those models without GW letting out any news that there would be a deamon codex till later.

...urrrr... I dunno

I like Summoned Daemons, they're great for horrendously irritating an opponent and tying up key units, or even contesting objectives. Mostly, I like the fact that, bar their save, they have a marine's statline and yet can assault out of deep strike.

In the time before the Great Shreeving, the full weight of chaos was available to the legions. Bloodletters, demonettes, keepers of secrets, Tzeentch flamers, all was aplenty.
And it was good.

But there was a hugh and cry among the followers of the corpse god, and with a cry of "its too complex" and "they have stuff we don't have THATS NOT FAIR!!!" they did march upon the gates of Mordor (GW), and did bind Chaos with powerful magiks, and did restrain it with wards.

And now you have generic demons.

I was going to post this myself

I often use mine as mentioned in a Daemon Bomb sense, its wonderful against a IG gunline. Bikers run up, laughing as Str 3 las guns bounce off T6 and only the icon needs to survive to unleash a whole wave of Daemons to kill and tie up an entire army.

Also I have made many a Tau player weep with this nasty trick.

They're good at tarpitting units like Terminators, Incubi, and ironically, Bloodletters. Also daemonbombing can really mess up a gunline, so they're a good unit to have in reserve.

They are great cheap units for holding objectives, making surprise attacks and can effectively augment your forces. Just looking at the stat line won't tell you everything.

Err, really nooby rules question... but do you HAVE to do your reserve roll each turn? Can Daemons drop when they're really not wanted?

Yes, you MUST roll for reserves each turn. There is no choice in the matter

Which is why you generally dont have one unit, and you also have multiple places for them to pop up, to give you greater flexibility.

Nothing more annoying then having a greater daemon pop on turn 2, when you're nowhere near as close as you'd like to be...
