My friends and I were bemoaning how devoid the Northeast valley was of any gaming stores. Scottsdale is the perfect spot honestly.
Please give us some specifics on location or perhaps the size of the store, are we talking a battle bunker or just a mall outlet like we saw in Tempe?

I would love to pass on the details but until lease is signed they are keeping mum on specifics BUT i was assured its 99% gonna happen - with the lawyers for lease signing atm, they have already had interviews for staff last Saturday. Not sure how big the site they are working on, would love it to be a battle bunker style but your guess is as good as mine on that front. I will add to this thread as news happens for all to know. They are also opening up in Orlando and Denver this summer if thats of interest to peeps. It's all about Scottsdale, AZ for me tho!!!!!
- Thanks for the welcome, loving the weather so far!

There used to be a store in the Arizona Mills mall up there, I can't recall how long ago they closed it though.
I believe there was one in Denver too, in another mall around C470. It was also closed a few years ago for some reason.

Going to be at Desert Ridge mall, single manager, 900sqft space, closed Monday/Tuesday, some hobby space, demo boards, and supposedly two 4x6 gaming boards.
Based upon what was relayed by one of the individuals interviewing for said manager spot.

Not sure why they got rid of the Tempe GW store but I do think Scottsdale is a great location choice for the upcoming store. Iv read on the Arizona wargamer website about a guy who confirms my news as he has had an interview for the job of hobby center manager for Scottsdale store link is below:

doesn't sound like a battle bunker but maybe that would be the next step once the store is successful.

there was a GW store in the Colorado mills mall in Golden but it closed down a long while a go. Unfortunately Golden is closer then Denver so that's kind of a bummer.

were you ever in the GW at the AZ Mills? i was there when it first opened and it was a closet, there was barely enough room to get all the product in the store, they had a tiny painting station that looked like it could only accommodate children and they had 2 4x4 tables for gaming. not to mention those had set 1hr time limits for games.
i miss the days of the Arizona Gamer store that was on baseline and mill before they moved to the smaller store they had atleast 10 tables for gaming.

Man, I'm glad i wasn't!! I'm confident that the newer the store the better it will be. Finally the kinks have to be out of the format. I know the battle bunkers are the cream of the crop but if its to be a regular new store I really think it will be a big step up from what you remember bud! No time limits, bigger boards, more product and people space than you fear. I've seen a few of the newer store formats and they are definitely well rated in my humble opinion

I think the store that used to sell all of the Under Armour stuff by Dave and Buster's went out of business. They would most likely take that spot as it's the only one around that square footage that is available. IIRC the only other vacant places in Desert Ridge are considerably larger than 900 square feet (The old sushi restaurant across from B and N and the big Anchor Blue store by the center courtyard)

I'm surprised if that is the spot as it is at the top of the metro area, wouldn't they think it best somewhere like Paradise Valley, slap bang in the middle of the area for all those actual and potential gamers? It would still be far enough away from other similar stores to enhance our community and lend lots of support for the north end of the valley. Wherever it ends up, I'll just be happy we have one. Now if it was a battle bunker THAT would be something special even if it seems unlikely from the posts. The bigger the better though if GW is listening!!! Roll on June.....

Desert ridge has a pretty strict and early curfew for people under 16. We can probably throw out the notion that GW is trying to sell 900$ armies to Little Timmy.

I am alright with this for a few reasons... the NE valleyneeds a dorkstore, being so small in sq footage it will not rival the great stores spread around the valley(imperial outpost, gamers inn, empire games, gamers inn) who have all fought to recently expand play space. However I think GW needs to consider the idea that they need to support the established stores as a community so they do not cut the throat of the only people keeping GW relevant incenteral AZ.
From the Tucson prespective I hope this helps the meager community propped up by Hat's alone... I want his business to share the trend of expansion that the phoenix stores have enjoyed; having a closer GW rep to get support from hopefully will be a boon and not a bane.

I have no idea why everyone is in love with the idea of a GW store coming to AZ.
They have gone to a model now where they now have small stores with one employee with nothing much in the way of gaming space.
They only have GW inventory so out goes all of the good 3rd party products like cheap gaming supplies, Army Builder paints, Gale Force 9 accessories, resin basis, 3rd party conversion bits, etc. Heck, Empire Games has a better selection of GW stuff then most GW stores. That is unless you are missing the “Hard Sell” of being pestered into buying the latest GW product. That is something you will not get at another game store.
Not only that, but now that they have a store in AZ, they will charge you state tax on all of your online orders through GWs website since they will have a physical presence here.
So what am I missing that everyone is raving about a new GW store?

El: Definitely wrong thread, this is old news.
Also, a GW store in Greater Phoenix doesn't interest me all that much. I'm much happier sticking with Game Depot, or Gamers' Inn if I want to get some late-night 40k on. Maybe it's me growing up in a state where it's no big deal, but I'm fine with driving an hour to get to a gaming store. (That and I <3 Game Depot.)
... And from what I've come to understand of GW stores, they're not that great in the personal customer service department. I'm used to a FLGS where I can pop my head in for ten minutes while running errands, just so I can say hi.

Definitely Game depot is the best, any AZ gamers should check it out. Dave and Patty are the best

I think I'm gonna have to stick with Game Depot for the most part. It's the closest FLGS to where I live (central AZ), but still a 45 minute drive... if traffic's decent.
Might be nice to check out if there's something I just gotta have( i.e. every other hobby-shop is out of "X" item", or on a major release day, but for the most part.. meh.

Tournaments -- Not sure! I don't live in the area, so I don't usually keep track of such things. (Maybe I -should- though, so I can time my visits ... hmm.) If you go in, Patty or the others will likely be quite happy to let you know. I know a couple friends of mine have played in a bunch of tournaments. They also have fun 40k-type events now and again (like Tanksgiving and the vehicle races), if you stop in.
Generally, 40kness tends to happen when enough people show up with an army to play. I stopped in when I was in town a couple months ago to play with a friend, and in the ten minutes before my buddy showed I had two people asking me if I wanted to get in a game. It was pretty nice, actually.

Its too bad they couldn't find a more central location in the valley, I live in Avondale which is literally almost about as far as you get from Scottsdale while barley staying in the metro area of Phoenix lol. Oh well, if there is something really worth traveling for... i guess this would be it.

Sunday is the general 40K day but there often someone there looking for a game on most days. There is generally a tournament or special event about once a month for 40k

This may be a bit off topic, but I don't understand why GW wouldn't put a store in the Mall of America up in the Twin Cities. It seems like it would be a pretty decent way to get the name out there further, since its probably one of the most traversed malls in the country.
