I want to start playing 40K how should I start? I have heard that the figures that come in assault on black reach aren't like the normal models and thats why they're cheaper and that would bug me, but on the other hand I would like to play SM and my friend that I'm starting with doesn't care what he plays because he's just in it for playing no painting I want to find a good way to start out with the paints i need and an army for a good price.

basically I'm just totally lost and I need help

On a hate rampage.

I got Black Reach and damn the marines annoyed me, they're awful models. The orks aren't half bad though

SM are a cliche and get boring quick (For me anywhoo) Largely they are considered very dull to paint.
What army you start is entirely up to you but I'd say
-If you like guns, sploions, robots, tanks, go with
Ig, Crons, Tau, or SM
-If you like swamping, go for
IG, Nids
-If you like CC then you want
BA, GK, Nids

Hope this helps in some way

The Black reach models are fairly snap-fit and aren't customizable unless you do some heavy conversions which is why a lot of people prefer the squad box sets.

However for the price, Black Reach is insanely cheap....especially if you want to start Marines or Orks.

Are you looking to start Vanilla Marines (Codex: Space Marines) or one of the other Marine variants? What kind of list are you looking to build?

It's worth it for the marines, book and dice, then you can sell the Orks here on the trade forums, ebay or a game store bazaar. You can convert some stuff too to save some cash. Dreadnaught is cool considering they are like $50

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

yeah i would say the AOBR set is worth it just to have the book, dice, and templates.

Find out what style of play you like the most. Go for mega-battles at FLGS, or, if you have played strategy wargames b4 (including RTS on the comp) think about how you played.

If you like shooting your opponent to pieces b4 he can even get close to you, Tau.

If you like artiallery, IG.

If you like boring, SM.

If you like having UBER skilled CC units, BA.

If you like swarming the enemy in CC, Orks or Nids.

If you like hit-and-run, DE.

If you want all-round elite units, Eldar.

If you want unstoppable HQ units that kill everything that even thinks about fighting back, CD.

Hope that helps!
