Don't know if this is the proper place to put this but I just read in the Vermin Lord's rules that he can't be the army general. WTF! Isn't he supposed to be the personification of the Great Horned Rat? Not to mention being a 500 point lord choice. That pretty much insures that short of 4000 points I'll most likely never field one, unless I can get my opponent to ok him being the general.

Why do I roll five 1's way more than I roll five 6's?

Or....

Get something for a Hero choice to be the General?

Training sheep, Stocking Urchins.

Just get a naked 15pts Warlock Engineer to be the general and stick him in a big unit to protect him.

Yeah, that could work !

Or if you don't like that, take a Plauge Priest on a Furnace surronded by Monks !

Bah, at 2500 points you can have a vermin lord + warlord with a cushy 35 points in gear to be the general. (Mine had foul pendant + charmed shield ) Even at 2k you just grab a priest or chieftain and suffer with a little less LD.

You know, I've been missing the Big VL, wonder if it's time to bust him out again?

Generally, the Grey Seer and Warlord combo is a better choice than the Vermin Lord, but the Vermin Lord can be fun if you're NOT facing a gunline army.

He's a Large 500 point fire magnet that can't pass on his LD who onyl has a 5+ Ward for protection.

I'd use him every game if that were a 4+, though. He's my favorite GW model.

I will have the Priest on Furnace in the game I am playing, but I really anticipate him getting shot to ribbons too. Facing dark elves. The guy usually fields a lot of Repeaters. I'll just have to give him tons of protection.

Give the 4+ ward save item

Or the Shadow Magnet. That'll f**k his repeaters up lmao!!!

Oh and give the monks either a storm banner, +1 movement banner, or plauge standard

He's also not a character, so not subject to being challenged away. He's just a Monster, who happens to be a level 4 caster.

Last time I fielded him, he ran up to an enemy Slave block, Breathed on them, and retired to the Warp by way of a nasty miscast, figuring his job was done. But he's a lot of fun.

(The model REALLY reminds me of a 2-armed Keeper of Secrets, though; that's not a bad thing.)

He's not a character, huh? I did not know that. The monks will definitely have the storm banner. Maybe I will give the Priest the shadow magnet, though I kind of wanted to give him a dispel scroll.

I asked this question a while ago (1-2 years?) and the answer that came back was that he was a character, because he's a lord and lords are characters. And I played him as such for 11 months with no issues (and with many overkilled champions to his name!). If he's not a character, I'd be interested to know how we know that, say, ogre bruisers are characters, and not units of 1 Monstrous Infantry bought from the 'Hero' slot.

Well, they ruled he wasn't at Adepticon.

It's an interesting question. WHFB doesn't have the "Independent Character" rule of 40k, but historically-speaking, there were things like Dragons which "took up" a Hero or Lord slot, while not being characters.

I'll dig into it more when I have my books.

Hmmm.... I'd be shocked if he's not a character, personally.

Adepticon might've ruled that way but I'd like to see some more justification for it. I really think that's wrong and sets a bad precedent. Models purchased from heroes/lords categories are all characters that I know of.

It's also (sort of) on page 124. The Vermin Lord is purchased from the "Lord" section of the army. "Lords" are defined on 124 as "... the most powerful characters in your army ..." (emphasis mine). The fact that they have a rule stating they can not use certain abilities normally allowed to characters (specifically: joining units and being the general) means that for that to be a necessary issue, the Vermin Lord would have to be a Character in the first place.
