If a battle cannon fired from a russ is directed at a target that would have cover from the shot but not cover from the center of the blast template does the unit being fired at get cover? If so how does that work? page of what book for rule if you know it. i wasn't able to find it

As far as I can tell the answer is no. On page 58 of the 5th edition rule book it does mention that barrage weapons fired indirectly are worked out from the center of the blast marker. I understand your point but as far as the rules go its a no go.

You need to check the sections covering obscurement and vehicles.

If the vehicle was obscured from the shot or had popped smoke or something else that gave it a save, then it had one, otherwise nothing.

Unless the battlecannon is a barrage weapon, the target will get cover saves in your example.

BARRAGE takes cover from the centre of the marker.
Ordnance does not. Cover saves are taken from the direction of shot, blast or otherwise.

Ordnance weapons CAN be BARRAGE as well as being BLAST, but not necessarily all at the same time.

I agree with chromedog.

The battle cannon is "Ordinance" and so cannot choose to fire as a barrage.

A Basilisk's Earthshaker Cannon, for example, is "Ordinance Barrage" and may choose to fire either directly or as a barrage.

Only Barrage weapons (firing indirectly) check cover from the center of the blast. All other blast weapons check cover from the firing model's perspective, like every other regular shooting attack.

Think a barrage weapon needs to be fired "blind", that is no BS subtraction, in order to claim the "take cover based on center-hole"-rule.

No. You can fire barrage at a target that is within line of sight and claim the reduced scatter and it is still barrage. If you have a weapon capable of firing in both modes it is never forced to fire in non-barrage mode.

No - if you can see a target you can fire as a barrage and still claim the BS subtraction. The lack of that only applies if firing at something you can't see. The disadvantage of firing as a barrage at a target you can see is that you are then stuck with a minimum range, which on some vehicles can be pretty hefty.
