Just to satisfy my curiosity (and to make me feel less like a slacker), I thought I would poll everyone to see how long it takes fellow gamers to fully paint a 1,000 point army of 40k. Between work and other commitments, it seems like it is taking forever to get mine done. (It also does not help that I am a perfectionist and want to paint like a pro, but my skills are somewhere between middle of the road and above average)

Less than a month for 1000 points. When I have a project going, I typically paint about 2000 points/month.

Day 1, assembly and a flat basecoat of whatever primary color the army is going to be.

Eg:
Red for mah Nids
Black for mah Necrons
Darkgreen for Ig Armor etc.

Day 2, drybrushing the majority of the unit.
Day 3, Flocking, Setting and then gaming
Day X, when i settle down and actually paint out all the detail on the army, model by model

Well, Painting is one of the least apealing things about the hobby to me(Playing, Collecting and Converting are my favorites) so to pain 1000 points would take me a while. Anywhere from 2-6 months depending on how determined i am.

I think it mostly depends on the army. 1000 pts of GK? a couple of days at most. 1000pts of footslogging orks? Weeks or months of dedicated painting.

Depends on the army. Necrons, in a week no worries.

Hm, if I concentrated on just one army and actually sat down and paint when I have the time (instead of watching TV, playing games etc) I guess I could, depending on the amount, detail and size of models, get a 1000 point army done in about a month given my average painting time.

As mentioned above its hard to say because some armies are alot easier to paint then others.

If I was really enjoy the army and just as importantly enjoyed working with the colours i could get it done in about 3-5 months. I do paint pretty slow though and my attention can be fickle at times.

I have said less than a month.
But, that's the SMs I have out now, and I've done around 600 points in the 4 months of this year.

Really depends. If I really feel like it I'll have it done in under a month. If I don't it gets put off a bit and takes a fair bit longer, but then when I feel like painting again I'll still have something laying around to paint. Sometimes I just get bored of painting the same thing over and over again so take a break or work on something else for a little before going back to it. Then there's the occasional assignment or exam that I need to do instead.

Whats wrong with you people?!?!?

Are you all on some sort of performance enhancing painting drug?

It takes me a solid month to finish a unit.

But seriously, some really devote painters here. I know many gamers who would love your demigod like-painting-powers.

Questions need to be asked on why only see fully painted armies at a ratio of 25:1

Edit: Do you all play Necrons or something? Is that your secret?

1000pts? I still haven't got 1000pts of orks (about 4 years serious hobbyage) that I would feel proud to slap on the table at a tournament.

Then again friendly games I couldn't give a crap about the poor & sometimes second-hand (as in the paintjob they had when I ebayed them) paintjobs.

I could knock out 1k points in about 2-3 weeks. That's low tabletop standard though. Double if I pay proper attention.

I sorta paint in bursts. I'll paint a unit in a week, then I'll not paint for three months, then do another bit, might get another unit done.

All over the place really. I did paint a 1000pt army for my eldest in around a month last year, so thats probably the best I could do.

Let's see, it takes me around a week to paint a single mini. Because I work stupid hour's (12 hr days) then by the time i get home I'm too fething tired to do owt but eat and sleep!!. So on that basis, ummmmm, 3 months for a Tac squad....errrr. Around a year to 18 months for 1k.....gulp.....

This is the result of 1 year (give or take a few weeks) of painting for me:

Easy to tell, since I started playing in Feb 2010 and started painting somewhere in March... and that picture was taken in late March/early april 2011.

That's a bit more than 3k worth of space marine (with no upgrades... if I start adding in special weapons, heavy weapons, power fists, other various upgrade, my 2 razorback las cannon turrets... as well as 'redundant' models - I have more heavy weapon and special weapon guys than I can legally put in a list) and 8 HQs... which probably push this up to 4k worth.

Simple math shows I can thus paint roughly 1k every 3 month.

That being said, I'm painting an ork green tide atm, and progess is noticeably slower

An eternity.

Painting is the most distasteful thing about this hobby.

I'm self-employed now and while busy I tend to have more spare time than most people. I can crank out an army in a few weeks.

I just bought, built and painted a 1500 point IG 'Death Korps' based army for a friends B-day with Forge World products... and it didin't even look like I used a Q-Tip to do it either.

I own at least 1000 points of every faction, plus numerous individual figures.
