I'm going to make some terrain - I want to layer the ground to create hills but also make some little desert dwellings, walls, steps. I intend to cover these areas with PVA glue and sand.

I think that this website offers the right kind of stuff but there are lots of options like foamboard, styrofoam etc. Which is the best for the kind of project I wish to undertake?

thanks

Foamboard/foamcore will become your best friend if you start making more complex buildings (i.e. ones with open interiors and/or thin projections), but for hills and such, I'd recommend polystyrene insulation sheets. They're those pink or blue sheets of stiff, dense foam ubiquitous in terrain threads. They can be cut, carved, and textured with common household tools. They're widely available in the US, but I've heard of people in the UK having to look around a bit to find the stuff.

[edit:] Looked at the site again, and what he calls "styrofoam" appears to be the extruded polystyrene insulation I was talking about. Can't say you won't pay a premium buying it like that, but it's the right stuff.

Is there a treatment for polystyrene insulation sheet to help protect it from scratches and dents?

Epoxy. Or fiberglassing. This also lends a more flowing look to hillsides and such. These should be done before any flocking.

Most hardware store, at least in the US, can sell you a two part epoxy by the gallon. You just mix it up and seal the foam after you finish the terrain. Once it's dry you can flock it and be done.
