So I'm building a Dark Eldar army and am going to shelve the Blood Angels for a bit, which was my first army in 40k. I'm going to try a shooty list.

Baron
Vect
4 True Born - 2 Splinter Canon, 2 Blaster-Venom with extra splinter
4 True Born - 4 Blaster-Venom with extra splinter
4 True Born - 4 Blaster-Venom with extra splinter

5 Warriors, 1 blaster-Raider
5 Warriors, 1 blaster-Raider
5 Warriors, 1 blaster-Raider
5 Warriors, 1 blaster-Raider
5 Warriors, 1 blaster-Raider
7 Wyches, haywires, Hekatrix with agonizer and grenades-Raider

Ravager with FF
Ravager with FF
Ravager with FF

The list is pimped to try to take advantage of alphastrike, with the baron adding +1 to deployment and Vect stealing the initiative on a 4+. Basic plan is just to out shoot and maneauver my opponent. I have one token assualt force with the Wyches. The Baron will go with the first trueborn unit in cover for a 3+ firing base.

I take it Vect goes with the wyches....where does the Baron go? You say the trueborn, but he's jump infantry and can't get into vehicles...and for the trueborn to be in range to shoot and alpha-strike, you're going to need to move up 12" and disembark out of the front - he won't make it into coherency to join them - leaving him out in the open.

And...really do think that Vect is a bad choice.

I was thinking of just putting the one unit of trueborn in cover, disembarked, on my side. Basically they sit in cover with the Baron and fire the 2 splinter cannons, and if anything gets close the blasters open up. Maybe not the greatest idea, but I could swap out for 2 dark lances, and just keep them back and take advantage of the 3+ cover save and the 2 albative trueborn, while the 2 lances blast away.

Vect's primary role is to mess with people's head, knowing that I can steal the initiative on a 4+, and giving me that much more chance of going first. He beefs up the Wyches assault somewhat too.

The Barron belongs with hellions. Maybe you can do something else with him but that's really where he's best. At least stick him with SOME kind of jump infantry.

Also, maybe I'm wrong but this list looks like a lot of flash and not much substance. The ravagers and the blast boats give you pretty solid antitank, but what are you going to do about infantry besides tickling their sides? By my count you have 30 lance weapons, but you only have something like 78 splinter shots in your entire force (including melee), one 7 man wych squad and- well thats about it for anti-infantry.

Hi Dash. I have read your DE strategy guide and i think its great I was just wondering why you think Vect is a bad choice. Ive had nothing but good experiences by fielding him in my army. It will be great to get some insight on the flip side of the coin.

Thanks

I think that he's a bad cost, and because the ability to seize on a 4+ is a 50% invitation to lose the game before the first turn if you haven't won the roll to go first.

Incinerating your hopes

He's the price of a land raider! I can see him working at higher point levels. But I think he's tough at lower levels to squeeze in without losing too much.
