If a newer-or poorer-player wants to start necrons but just can't (or won't) shell out for a monolith, are they better off with Heavy Destroyers, Spiders, both or neither?

By the time you buy enough Heavy Destoyers or Spyders, your paying just as much or more than a Monolith anyway.
Heavy Destroyers are rarely used, although you could go for an almost all Destroyer list (Just 2x 10 Warriors coming on from reserve), but i think most people still use Monolith or two with 15 Destroyers. and Tomb Sypers are probably best when using 9 and lots of Scarabs... Costing more than 2 Monoliths

Save up and buy the Monolith. It is worth for the look of dismay on your opponents face when you plunk it down on the table.

Heavy destroyers are your best choice if you don't want a monolith (or hate the model as my father does).

They are fast, relentless, can fit the almighty destroyer wing army and can hit tanks pretty reliably too. They are also great for sniping down IC who just happen to be meandering alone or who can't join other squads (mephiston).

Spyders are cool, but they're really slow and will get danced around by the enemy. Their ability to generate scarabs offers shooting protection, but they are really not all that good.

My only beef with the Monolith model is that it doesn't fit into the be GW army case i have. Annoying.

I dislike the massive green crystal sitting on top of it. And destroyers look much cooler imo.

Buy a Monolith. The other options don't really compare, unless you are running the 30 scarab/9 spyder army.

Heavy Ds are only good against medium vehicles and T4 multiwound models, and a lesser extent against 2+ saves. Monoliths do most of that better, and most 2+ save units need to be deal with by a C'tan anyway.

SO, when a player first starts Necrons, is the Monolith one of the first things to buy?

I think the best advice you could get would be to not buy any of them and just save up your money for now. Necrons have a new codex on the way, as well as new models.

This is also a good idea. But following this, you might want to buy models which could soon disappear, if you like the look of them. I thinking about the metal ones especially, and perhaps the lords.

No, Id still suggest buying them. Specially if you get used to how they are now, a new codex will make them seem like gods, and that will do wonders to ones morale about the army.

Just buy the monolith from ebay seriously if you're spending money on tomb spyders and heavy destroyers assuming you want 3 of them then you may aswell get a monolith
