Good day, denizens of of this board.
This is a quick dirty tutorial on how to make Sonic Blasters. The Blasters are rudimentary and inornate on porpose, this is just about making the basic shape. As there are no boundaries on how to design your blaster, I left the part of detailing it out. This is my first tutorial ever and I hope that I get my point across.
What you need:
-A C/
SM left bolter arm
-A C/
SM right bolter arm
-A C/
SM flamer
-A C/
SM plasma pistol.
-A blister or some other very thing plastic
-A sharp knife
Plastic glue
Super Glue
Some sort of modelling putty
Optional: (you don't need these, but they help alot)
-Rubber Clayshaper
-Sculpting tools, among them an inward and outward curved one (it looks a bit like a airplane wing with a sharp edge)
-A brush handle or other round stick with approximately 3-4
mm diameter
-Big, flat tweezers
-A fine rasp or sandpaper
Any marine player of any colour should have arms, flamers and plaspistols aplenty. So, let's get this started.
Step 1:
Cut at the red lines. The red line on top with the "handle" and little details is not required, but I removed it to distinguish the blaster more from the flamer.
Just like this:
I haven't cut the flamer end here yet. I underestimated it and had to cut it with the green stuff already applied. Don't do that. Be smart and make the curve larger beforehand.
Step 2:
Slap the green stuff on the flamer. I used a rough mix of 40/60 blue/yellow to get a nice green and soft mass that would be perfekt to pull around. The end already has a nice shape for a screaming head, so the trapezoid comes on its own. The clay shaper helps a lot here to smooth it out. Remember, if you want a hard edge, draw the sculpting tool towards the edge and always keep your sculpting tools wet!
The next part is taking your knife and cutting in the mouth. I used the "sharp plane wing" tool to widen the mouth and the brush handle to make it even wider and to give it a nice round edge. Then I took the tweezers and pulled the lower jaw down, into a unnatural screaming position. Holes for eyes, nose(s) and so on should be done now, at least to give you a general idea where they are later one.
Let it dry a few hours, then you can get it into shape with your knife and rasp and define the edges.
Step 3:
Use your knife to cut out five trapezoid with the long edge curved inward, the size of your mouth. If you are using the transparent blister, you can just cut out one shape and copy it by simply putting it under the plastic and cutting along the edges. This might be obvious to some, but it took me four attempts to produce another nicely fitting piece until I thought "Hey, I can SEE through that blister! Why not just put the perfect one under it?"
Once you are done, apply some super glue to the mouth and put the five pieces into their place.

Just cut away what stands over the mouth. It should be nice and smooth.
Step 4:
Now the plaspistol: Remove it from the hand holding it, remove the skulls and make the bottom side flat.
Glue the right arm into its place and the use the plaspistol to bulk the back end of the weapon up.
I used some Green Stuff to cover up the transition and thought "Hey, it's Slaanesh, who if not him/her would sew up his/her weapons?" and thus I put a seam on it, for some added detail. Flesh? On my Chaos weapons? More likely than you think!
Step 5:
Let the thing alone for half an hour before you move on. The plastic glue doesn't hold the cut plastic pieces that good and you don't want to mess up your nice transition, as I have demonstrated here.
The last part is giving the head the finishing touches. Add cheeks and define the face a bit more. I decided to go for an organic, fleshy look, defined the eyebrow with a tiny
GS sausage and cut in where I would later define gills (I just liked the idea of gills on the head.) It should be easy to put your knife between the cheek and the first plate in the mouth, to lift it a tiny bit from the plates. Remember: Wet knife or ruined mouth!
The basics of the weapon are now finished. The details are up to you now, but I for one found it works quite good to drill into the muzzle of the plaspistol and stick a guitar string into it, to do slaanesh-knows-what with the string.
Not counting the time the
GS needed to cure,, I worked 30 to 45 minutes on the whole weapon. Quick, comparably easy and possible to mass produce if you want to stick the full number of blasters into your Noise Marine squads.
I hope this small tutorial helped. That's it, go forth and blast people with sound!
