I would appreciate peoples views on this list, as I am fairly new to gaming. I have no idea what I will be fighting, so I made it as a general all rounder:

HQ

Chaos Lord-90p

Troops

7 chaos marines /w aspring champion /w power fist- 145p

6 chaos marines /w aspring champion

Heavy Support

2 Obliterators-150p

Which comes in at exactly 500p, what do you guys (and gals) think?

The key to low point games is 2 fold. Speed and Guns.

You have 2 guns and no speed. I don't think this is going to cut it. If I were to build a 500 point CSM force, I'd do it like this.

(110) Sorcerer- Doombolt
(160) 5 CSM- flamer, champ, combi flamer, power weapon, Rhino, combi plas
(155) 5 CSM- melta, champ, combi plas, rhino, combi plas
(75) Obliterator

EDIT:
Having Rhinos protects your troops from enemy small arms fire- which coupled with the lower volume of anti tank fire in 500 point games makes your troops far more survivable and able to get to objectives and the enemy faster. Adding Special and Combi Weapons as many places as possible also significantly increases the amount of fire power your list has to offer.

The sorcerer is a better choice then an unupgraded lord. To compare the 2 the sorcerer has a ranged attack, and is better in close combat. Consider that he comes with a power weapon stock, and if he didn't cast doombolt he can ID enemy commanders with his force weapon.

I like akaean's advice.

But, if what you posted are the only models you have, then split the oblits into separate units. Splitting your fire power helps you and it makes it harder for the enemy to kill them (always try to do this with fire power, like Oblits, tau crisis suits, Devs/Long Fangs etc).

And instead of a Chaos Lord, go with the Sorcerer, but with Lash. Holy-moly! the things Lash can do for you, especially with Oblits warming up PlasmaCannons.

I'm a mediocre player (record-wise), but I had only two losses in a recent ladder campaign, and the rest of my victories were due to the wonders that Lash+Oblits can do.

Did a 1000pt doubles tourney (500pts each) a while back with a chaos player, IIRC his list was:

HQ - DP with LoS
Troops - 1x10 marines in rhino (FoC only needed 1 troops per person)
Heavy support 2x1 Oblits

His half of the army was quite effective on its own, maybe you could try something similar?

I dont know the mission though, do if it's kill points, I could be screwed.
