I was watching a game the other day and an issue came up with a building with a roof on in that units could deploy on. One of the players said that 3+ armor save removes the opened top rule on a vehicle and so it should on a building as well. I couldn't find this 3+ open top removal rule so i though I would as the forum. What do you think?

It was something with the Rhino. In the old Marine dex it justified their tank status since the occupants were wearing Power Armor. In addition, the Rhino in the Witchhunter (and I think Daemonhunter) dexes also said that the rhino would count as open topped if any of it's occupants had a save worse than 3+.

So does that mean that the building would not be open toped?

That would be a specific ruling for a specific unit. I dont know if it would apply, especially since Rhinos apparently now are still non-open topped despite being able to transport models with lower armor saves.

Buildings count as AV12 according to the rulebook.

And in the current rulebook, you have it backwards. =p Vehicles that would normally be open-topped (like landspeeders) do not count as such because of the 3+ armour on the models.

For relevance, buildings with armour values and roads that grant movement bonuses are pretty much disallowed from tournaments everywhere.

Did not know that. though it makes sense cause ive never had roads or buildings w/armor values in a tounie.

Thanks.

Not Always, one store I play at that has tourny's on a monthly basis or so, does have buildings and roads in them.

there are different types of buildings.

Bastions and Bunkers are AV14,

Fortified buildings are 13,

Civilian stone or concrete buildings are 12,

Houses are 11,

thatched buildings or scrap iron(read ork) buildings are 10.

this is in the Rule Book.

Buildings arent "disallowed" so much as people dont often have them for scenery

Vanguard, an awesome Bristol gaming group, have an obscene number of obscenely good intact Buildings n their boards.

The "open topped if not in 3+" was a specific rule for specific units. It does NOT apply to buildings at ANY POINT. And, you were only open topped if you shot out of a fire point with any models with worse than a 3+, it wasnt all the time...

Yeah the 3+ save and oppen topped rule went a while ago. Buildings are never open topped anyway. Deploying on the roof just allows edveryone to shoot and gives +1 on the damage table which, whilst effectely is the same as open topped, does not grant them the status of open topped.

Page 79, BRB "Attacking Buildings" ".....Units inside a building may not be attacked directly, but will be affected in the same manner as units inside a transport vehicle......" If the building has a parapet with models on the roof the attacker still can't shoot the unit but gets +1 to the damage roll.

Yup, it having models on the roof has pretty much the same effect as being open-topped... but isn't actually open-topped.

Let me revise my statement then.

Podunk stores scattered around...wherever....can house rule whatever they want because it is their store. Regional, national, and pretty much any major event anywhere in the world does not use armoured buildings or movement bonus roads because they are potentially unfairly advantageous to some codexes more than others.

And before anyone gets scrappy with me for offending their local gaming group....I don't make the news or give two gaks or a flying feth either way, I just report it.

I just played in one on the weekend that did.

Anecdotal evidence does not equal data.Tournaments everywhere will continue to make up their own rules as to what they do and don't use.

Dash - major tournaments DO use intact buildings.

Your lack of experience of them is not proof of their non-existence
