Is anyone aware of any well-known mercenary forces other then the Kroot?

Xenos such as the Nekulli are described as being often employed as mercenaries. Even Eldar Corsairs and Dark Eldar bands have been known to do it from time to time.

As for groups within the Imperium itself, they probably do exist on a large-scale, particularly among the pirate bands that are common. Rogue Traders also regularly employ Mercenaries. However I can see the Imperium cracking down heavily on the concept of mercenaries as everyone should fight for the Emperor over profit, so they're probably not very sophisticated.

The Imperium lets these groups exist in case they need some troops which not necessarily affiliated with them...

A few Dark Eldar kabals work as mercs too.

Interesting, I was looking into some kind of corporate mercenaries faction. Professional and skilled vs just your average gun for hire.

There would be a mix.
Veteran guardsmen that are still willing to fight would be looked for.
But they would always need grunts... for gruntwork i suppose.

I didn't know that many mercenariness existed in 40k...
Even stranger that Imperium is hiring Xenos to fight for them...
What happened to all that "purge the Alien" dogma?

The Imperium may have that as its official stance but actual action is largely down to the commander on the field.
Why waste Imperial troops when you have a load of xenos willing to die for you?

well hive gangers are sometimes hired by the adeptus arbites to hunt for monsters in the under hive and lots of gangers are forced to join the imperial guard and lots sell them selfs off as mercs

The Eisenhorn and Ravenor Omibus's have many exmaples of Imperial mercenaries and Xeno retinues employed, they are worth a read!

The Vessorine janissaries from Eisenhorn spring to mind, also in "Emperors mercy", there are some Mercenaries used by a Imperial general.

I think some DE will work for hire.

I've wondered about this too, I haven't ever found anything that talked about human mercenaries on a large scale....I just assumed the Imperium, especially inquisitors, would just say "Hey you over there you work for me now.....what you want money to fight? Ha! How about we pay you by not strapping you to a post and setting it on fire. " and that would be that.

Humans exist on so many worlds in the fluff though I guess almost anything can happen somewhere in the galaxy, it is definately a fun idea.
