So my case is cooked due to me stepping on it in the middle of the night and given I do not have $50 to drop for another one I'm kinda stuck. All of my 25mm units are traveling in egg cartons comfortably for the moment, but I'm at a loss as how to transport my bikes, speeder, and Land Raider. I would like the solution to be able to fit in a backpack and not need to carry around an extra case if at all possible. Any ideas dakka?

If you don't have $50 to spend on a new GW case, you certainly don't have the money for any of the alternative solutions.

I'd suggest a summer job and not leaving your stuff in the middle of the floor at night.

Definitely the second thing. I have a full time job but college and rent eats all of my money.

Shoebox works, I'll try to hunt one down.

Really? There are a lot of free (or virtually free) solutions to this problem. I like to use battleforce boxes and toilet paper for my tanks, I can fit three in there easily and have a quarter of the box left for turrets, sentinels or whatever. My vendetta fits in a battleforce box if I take the wings off and I can fit two chimeras in the spare space, filling the rest with packing peanuts. I have to be careful that I pack tightly around the front antenna, but it has been fine so far.

The two boxes that I take to games night fit perfectly in the bottom of a gym bag that I have, the infantry go in an old GW case full of egg carton like foam.

You don't need to spend loads, it just makes it easier to pack and a bit more secure. The only breakages that I have had have been when the models are outside the boxes, and this is with me using rush hour public transport.

Wow, dismissive and demeaning. Also not entirely true. There are plenty of inexpensive ways to store your miniatures.

Here's what I use now: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/362407.page

but if you don't want a carry case I'd go with a box packed with foam. With scisors, a knife and some hot glue (or elmers) and foam you can make box that might look a little rough, but will hold your vehicles securely.

Here's a box that I used to use to store my basilisk gun decks.

For foam, ask friends who have any kind of job that recieves any kind of shippments. I have a friend who has a friend that gets shippments of computer parts at his job. He brings us lots of boxes that are about half the size of a battleforce box and contain two sheets of egg foam. Alternatively, keep an eye in the alley for disgarded furniture. If it doesn't smell then cut the fabric away and take the foam, give it a wash on the delicate cycle and you're set.

Or, hit walmart for a pistol or rifle case.

That is awesome! I've heard many folks talk about rifle cases, but I've never seen one actually pictured in use.

A rifle case is by far the cheapest option with the most space. If you don't relish carrying around a rifle case, though, check out the 4-pistol case in the link in my post above. Similar idea, and quite flexible, but it won't store as many tanks as a rifle case.

That's a double rifle case. For larger tanks you'll want a double scoped-rifle case.

I use Iris Storage containers, their clear and pretty cheep. I can fit 7 chimers in the 12"x12" case they sell, with extra space for a few models, tools and parts. There is 4 Valkyries in the larger case (magnetized basses). Though I dont worry to much about scratching the paint job on my tanks... And the case has a little heart icon on it, but hey they work.

That Iris is a good sized case. For those worried about scratching, with some cardboard dividers you could really protect the tanks from most damage. And if you lined the cardboard and the plastic case with funky foam you could make a very safe case.

Funky foam is thin EVA foam used in crafts. It comes in 2mm and 3mm sheets from craft stores for very cheap (89-99 cents a sheet). It's a thinner cut of the same dense stuff that alot of miniature case makers use for the bottom of their foam trays.

That's good to know. It's not really an option for me to be seen carrying around a rifle case, but it'll be good info to pass along.

Another remarkable thing about the various rifle and pistol cases is that some of them cost less than the price of the foam they contain. With the exception of surplus lots from manufactureres, and possibly some mattress pads, I've yet to find a dealer that sells grey pluck foam or eggshell foam cheaper than what Plano charges for some of it's most basic pistol, rifle and Accessory cases which come with foam.
