Hi there!

I wanted to get a Renegade Militia squad from FW for using them in normal w40k games, as I like the models and the unit. I would use the Imperial Armour rules, which are very similar to the IG's ones.

The question is: are Imperial Armour units (excepting Apocalypse units) usable on normal W40k games? I red somewhere, in some official place, that those units were made for being used in normal w40k games, but I'm not sure. Could you confirm it?

Thank you very much! ^^

IA books are more intended for Apocalypse Games but I don't see why they couldn't work in normal ones.

There's also the Eye of Terror Codex fyi, it has a Chaos renegades army list as well for normal games.

2,700pts

IA does have units and army lists that were meant for use in normal 40k. The problem is 90% of tournaments don't allow IA units, and 99% of them don't allow IA lists.

If you like the models just use them to represent things in the IG codex.

Most tournaments don't allow IA lists, simply because they don't want to bother with them, more than for any balance reasons. For normal play, it's about as legal as anything else since that all boils down to "do you want a game with my army?" anyway regardless of what you are using.

The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

That was partly the case with some of the more famous models, but the vast majority of IA stuff (I would say 90% at least) is perfectly usable in 40k games.

Most of the stuff is pretty well balanced, and if anything a little overpriced (so I shouldn't think you will get complaints about them being imbalanced). The only real exception I can think of is the lucius drop pod, but certainly nothing from the IA5 FW list.

If you're outside the tournament scene I can't imagine it being a problem. If anything, a lot of players will probably welcome playing something so characterful and away from the standard MEQ army.

The vast majority of IA units are for use in 40K.

The eye of terror codex is long out of date while the IA renegades list is in-line with the current guard codex.

This is a large part of it.

There's also the whole stigma of the unknown. Many people know what to expect from their opponent's armies, but FW stuff is relatively rare.

If you're going to be doing 'normal play', just have the printout handy and if any issues come up make sure your opponent gets to read it and/or the book.

Definitely, I think there is still a little bit of the early FW: IA 'hangover' remaining, where if you said that you had some FW stuff that usually meant plonking a whacking great Baneblade on the table (to the cries of dismay of opposing players) but that sentiment is gradually fading into the background I feel.

I figure as long as you're not using superheavies like Baneblades and Titans and such, Forgeworld stuff is fair game. I'd be happy to fight any Forgeworld list.
