I've played a few games with my orcs and goblins and I'd like to make sure if the way i play my nasty skulker is legal.

It is a unit of 50goblins, 5x10, with musician and standard bearer.
On the front rank i put My general and battle standard bearer and a mage with the command.

When the unit enter close combat for the first time, I must revealed my 3 nasty skulker inside and place them like joining character.

As i can't move the command from the front rank as in page 92 and 97, i placed them on the front rank displacing the others character already there (General, BSB and Mage) to the second rank.

I've seen nothing saying that a model engage in close combat couldnt be move except during a reform.

So am i wrong by doing this and why?

This is perfectly legal and something a tactic a lot of people make use of.
Once the Skulkers are dead, there is no rule that says you must move the characetrs back to the front rank, so just replace them with rank-and-file models.

Not something I use in friendly games, but, I probably would consider it in competative situations.

What does the skulker rule say?
The dark elf assassin rule says he displaces rank and file, and if no rank and file are in the front rank, then you displace characters or command.

the rulebook says you 'Place the Nasty Skulkers following the rules for characters joining a unit.'

You also could probably use the Make Way rule to put them in the front, but that only really mentions displacing command units and rank and file.

As they are not characters, they couldn't benefit from the 'make way' rule

But skulkers *are* characters, I thought. Their unit entry in the list describes them as: Infantry (Character) if I remember correctly.

“It was in lands of the Chi-An where she finally ran him to ground. There she kissed him deeply as he lay dying, and so stole from him his last, agonized breath.

On a delicate chain at her throat, she keeps it with her to this day.”

Yea, that's what I was thinking, that they are characters. No idea though myself, just working off what I had read on the forums here previously about them.

The new FAQs for the BRB and O+G armybook change things.

From the BRB FAQ..
Characters must now move into a front rank spot as soon as one becomes available.
Characters must go to the rank closest to the front, that has a space available, when moving within a unit.

And from the O+G FAQ...
Nasty Skulkers may only displace rank and file models to make space for them.
