Subject: How should I make an artillary style army.

So I've been sitting here thinking to myself about different army styles I seem to enjoy.
I play a lot of RTS games, DoW/CoH/Starcraft/Warcraft and so on.
And I was trying to think of a fun way to adapt how I play those games into an army on the tabletop.
I was thinking of trying to do an artillary battery army
To do this, I was thinking either Guard (so far, top contender) or Orks with Big Gunz and Lootas.
But I'm not sure how I'd execute the idea really... Which brings me to my question.
I'd obviously run some Basilisks/Griffons ect. in a Guard army and lay down as many pie-plates as I could each round to blow everything to bits.
But not sure how well it'd work.
*EDIT*
I was thinking Iron Warriors, but from memory the CSM Codex doesn't have much in the way of long ranged weaponry does it?
Has anyone got any decent ideas or seen any decent artillary battery lists I could try to build off to use?
Thanks in advance
~Danzag

Guard. As much artillery as you can cram in, and then mortars, mortars everywhere.
|
There are some who walk until their legs fail them and they fall to the ground. I find that respectable.
Then there are those who drag themselves further. I find that admirable. |

I've been reading over a heap of posts.
I'm gonna go with the Guard.
Are Devil Dogs worth taking over Vets with Meltaguns?

Devil dogs are generally considered to be the worst option when it comes for fast attack slots. For the points, get the meltavets in a chimera.

Ahhk, well then Meltavets in Chimera it is.
Will probably go down to my Local GWS and see what they have to say on the subject of massed Artillary.

The Most expensive Model they have....
Just get 9 Bassilisks and some stuff to slip into the Elites and Fast Attack

3 Manticores is generally considered IG's best artillery list. It could also be backed up by PBS in Chimera. At that point you've got enough pie, so I would focus all remaining points on melta vets and vendettas. It's actually a pretty cookie cutter IG list.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

just a tip, putting basilisks in squads in my opinion are bad as normaly 3 basilisks are shooting at one target is an overkill, if you want alot barrage choose mortars and manticores

A slight variant of the 3x Manticore list would be 2x Manticores and 2x Basilisks. The squadron rule hurts the Basilisks less because they should be out of LOS and 2 weapons will give you the same average firepower as 1 Manticore. The nice thing is that you get an AP3 option as well as breaking up the types of models used so it feels less spammy.

Manticores, basilisks etc in whatever quantity work well in HS - make sure oyu use all 3 slots so they can shoot at 3 different targets.
For other slots, the valyrie with hellstrikes/rocket pods has a nice template attack. HWS with mortars from troops and the MOO in the CCS.
Maybe go for some grenade launchers on troops and a PBS from the elites.

well if IA is an option you can get "proper" artillery as well, with entrenched basilisks and quad-launcher to mention a few.
A manticore or two should at least be included....
Like minigun says a squad of 2 basilisks would be a nice addition (or griffons being so cheap)

Pair of manticores, a bassy (maybe two), and a Russ IMO.
You'd be surprised how often you find yourself very grateful to that russ you took, not dieing to long range fire like the arty pieces do- and its still another pie plate

Manti dont come in squadrons, as awesome as that would be.
Russ are pretty cool, though I'd prefer demolisher or executioners these days to protect arty from close up threats.
