So i've recently been tempted back into collecting by constant harrasment from a friend and thought I'd post my work so far as a motivational thing.

It's going to be a darkeldar force, starting with a unit of Kabalites and a Raider and expanding from there depending on the army list i work out and the speed of my painting xD

So to the painting, it's a little rusty as this is the first miniature painting i've done in about 10 years! But as usual tips/experiences would be great if anyone has them

The rest of the unit are still in the early stages but i'm completing this model first as a test hopefully I'll get the unit done in the next week or so as i'd drooling over getting a Talos!

Oh and if anyone's got tips on a good bracing technique for highlight / lining hard to reach areas that would be great as some of the lining gets a little shaky in areas.

I brace my elbows into the bottom of my ribs and place the bottom part of the ball of my palm together with my brush in my right and model in the left, this lets me bring the model close to my face and I just use my fingers to move the brush and figure to where i need it, hope that kinda makes sense?
also, nice model! :-) looking good, black armour is always a winner with me!

Ok a little update, not had much time to paint and it takes a while to do DE highlights when your still learning but i made some progress this weekend in the time i had

The initial highlights worked out fairly well, still trying to decide if the lightest layer needs more yellow. Looking forward to getting the rest of the bodies done so i can move onto painting the heads this weekend.

*edit* oh and not that many will be interested but I've started a blog on my 40k learning curve which hopefully will grow over time, it is newbie ramblings though so don't expect a blogging masterpiece Inept Painting

I was in the same boat, out of the hobby for nearly five years before the new DE models sucked me back in

Awesome start mate, I'm subscribed. Loving the scheme, seems very insectile/dangerous.

Looking forward to more

Ok it's been a few days and paintings been running at a pretty glacial pace (damn life and its interruptions) but i did at least get a little highlight on the rest of the unit done and got some work on the heads out of the way.

Not sure about the flesh tone as its tricky to highlight very pale flesh, but its good enough for a first try ^^, need to get myself a bigger selection of washs though!

Awesome work. I'm really digging your crisp looking lines along the segmented parts.

Ok another day another post

Got a little done last night on the test model and a fair bit on the rest of the unit.

Added Gem, metal scarring/highlights, dry brushed hair highlight and the rest of the hair stuff

Bad news is the pictures are a little blurry, as i rushed them this morning before work, so some of the detail is hard to see :(

Very nice.

The obsidian rose kabal is easily my favourite colour scheme, and I will definitely use it when I (finally) get round to painting my own dark eldar...

These look very good; and I look forward to seeing this progress!

Was

Elf flesh (I also wash the recesses around the nose and eye sockets here with a fair bit of devlan mud)
Elf flesh + Fortress Gray (about a 1:1 or 1.5:1 mix from memory the grays there to tone down the elf flesh)
Bleached Bone + Fortress Gray (Again about 1:1, first layer of highlights)
Skull White + Bleached Bone (2:1 or 3:1 you only add the bone to off-colour the white)

You can simplify the mix a lot if you buy dheneb stone (as it can replace the Elf flesh + Fortress Gray stage but im cheap)

There are also some good examples out their of people who go dheneb stone -> wash -> white/dheneb stone highlight, which looks easier, but I didn't want to go quite as gray as that.

Ok got a reasonable amount of painting done today *cheer*.

Finished the main body and i'm about 50% through the gun and arms (which should make an appearence completed tomorrow)

Paint scheme turned out pretty well so far just got to work out how i'm going to jazz the base up if i can ^^

Oh and the pics are better than the last set but a little bright towards the base due to the lighting xD hopefully i can work on a diffuser this weekend too.

Yeah I kinda noticed that too, not a fan of the fact there are quite so many Gems on the backpacks but hey worked with what was there will probably adjust it on the next unit of kabalites

Anyhow guns and arms are on so this is the first finished (baring the base) model in my 40K career ... Just got to get the rest of the unit this far *cough*

great color scheme, and the last picture there really looks good with the finished arms. i really like the shading on some of the parts like the knees and the spaulders, and the gun tag.

i see the fish head too =P good conversation piece? lol

"Sir, we're completely surrounded!!!" ======= "Excellent, now we can shoot in any direction."

It's not a question as to where my motivation comes from, but rather how it manages to survive.

Yeah the arms turned out pretty well, think I need to work on the poses for the rest of the models though as this one looks a little static :/

Posted the actual mix further up, but quickly it was layering.

Elf flesh -> Devlan mud wash in shadowed areas -> Elf flesh + Fortress Gray -> Bleached Bone + Fortress Gray -> Bleached Bone + Skull White

^^

Good, we allways need more of those armies, what are they called, oh yeah. Not loyalsit space marines.

Your figures are looking great, an entire army of them like it would look rather fantastic in my opinion.
