If your playing footsloggers, you want to be as close as you can, as quickly as you can, so always take the first turn (if you win to choose of course). Because otherwise the opponent is going to use that first turn to:
a) move further away from da ladz!
b) open fire!

as an ork i usually go first. however if i'm playing wanna be IG orks (i have a backstory for why, they are on an IG training planet and got used to trench warfare stuff) then i usually liek to go second... but htat's a fluff list, for most viable ork lists you wanna go first

I usually only go second when playing more than two objectives against armies that have lots of skimmers/jump infantry/etc. Denies them the possibility of last-round objective grabs. First at all other times.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

If you're footslogging a green tide, more than likely your deployment zone is jam packed with orky green goodness.
Moving first is good for all of the reasons above, but it is also good to help your orks spread out in case your opponent has template weapons. Usually, if they have blast weapons my 1850 list (of about 160 models) is taking up the entire deployment zone. If they have zero blast weapons, I am now bunching all of my sluggas and shootas as close as they can get to the deployment line without going over.
