The model up top is similar to my color scheme I am doing for my BA. I was wondering how they did the wash for this to get the black in all the crevices? (On the red half of the model)

Do you think they liberally washed it all down with Badab Black wash? or Do you think they dabbed it only in the recesses?

You can always wash after the base color coat and then put the mid range and high light color over the wash coat too.

Cool thanks!

Do you think he used badab black wash to get that effect of black in the recesses? Or did he use Chaos black and super fine brush to line it?

Looks like a black wash or ink, though it could have been painted black and over brushed with silver hard to say. Very hard and time consuming to line in that small.

So to get that similar type of effect I should wash black liberally all over it? (The black in the recess part)

I already have it basecoated and blended the way I like it but the recesses are all red now and the depth is screwed up.

How to do the bestist washes -

Gloss varnish your model.
Water down some oil paint with white spirits.
Apply a small amount (ie with a damp brush) of clean spirits to the area you are going to wash.
Apply the thinned-down oil paint.
Use kitchen towel or cotton buds (q-tips) to mop up any excess.
Leave to dry for a couple of days.
Seal with gloss varnish & continue painting.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Heh...sounds like more work than I'm willing to put into my models...thanks though.

So to get a similar effect of the black in the recess would doing a liberal all over Badab Black wash over the red work? Or is there more to it than that?

I dont see it being washed. An easier way is to just base coat the model with a drak red like scab red over black primer. Then to use equal mixes of scab red with blood red then work your way up to blood red. Maybe even add some yellow to the blood red for highlights, even though the model you showed does not have those highlights. But you would just paint the raised areas and then line the edges.

Critical Fail at step #1.

Gloss varnish is a TERRIBLE idea for painting a model. It's not usually a good idea to put a gloss varnish on most models as a sealer, let alone before applying paint.

You've obviously not read the FW Masterclass book or read any AFV painting magazines.
Gloss varnish produces a very smooth finish, which is why it's shiney, while matt gives a rough finish (comparitively) and difuses light hitting it.
Being smooth, washes will flow to the recesses rather than pool or spread.

Also it's always nice, when you make a critisism, to justify your point of view rather than SHOUT.
Thank you.

On second thought, no need to.

Just looking at the pic of the model in question. it looks like it was based black and then had a pretty heavy black wash aftetr the first coat of red was applied. Then they did a highlight with a lighter red.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

Oil painting requires different methods to acrylic painting, one of which is the use of varnishes (both gloss and matt).

Honestly, that model doesn't look washed at all. Just blending and highlighting.
