I've recently run out of some basing sand I've had a while, So I went down to my local store and bought some more, It was only when I got home when I noticed that the sand is totally different, it's all dead fine now when the old stuff used to actually look like real earth which slightly larger stones. Whats happened to it? If they have discontinued it, can anyone reconmend a new type of stuff?

You can see the difference in one of my pictures, The mode at the front has the new sand I bought and the models behind have the old sand.

Cheers.

I can't really see the base upon your model, but I think I know what you mean. I had basing material from 3rd ed that seemed to be cork, but now have changed to actual sand. You should try to get some from Gale Force 9 basing grit, it seems closest.

You guys buy sand? Mine came free with a day at the beach a couple summers ago. I just brought an old Tupperware container and took decent sized scoops of sand from 4 or 5 different points closer to and farther away from the water, got a great mix, and all it cost me was a bit of sunburn.

Living by the beach gives me the same luxury, but Gale Force Nine sells various grades of sand that intermixed would provide a good feel. I've bought some of their non-sand basing materials, and I love them.

I just use local beach sand, cleaned and dried.
(I bleach it to kill any little critters in it, not to alter the colouring of it - which, since it is painted anyway, is rather irrelevant).

Yea paying for GW sand? Man, I could never stomach paying for that. Wouldn't finding it in any of the places mentioned or at least a Home Depot be oh so much cheaper? If it's wet, just throw it in on a tray and put it in by a dry part of your house (furnace, fireplace, heating vent) or even in an oven.

Usually somewhere in England

For larger stones I get fine granite chips from the local train hobby store (much more than you'll get from GW at half the price).

For sand, I do the same as the other guys (but the beaches around me are generally more mud than sand!) and mix it with chinchilla bathing sand from the pet shop (the really fine stuff - mixed with red paint, makes really good gore).

It's like buying slate from hobby companies - the local DIY store will have a bag of all you will ever need for much cheaper (and if you live in the right place just pick it up).

If you really want to buy, then Antenociti's workshop has a huge range of basing materials - they are bound to have what you are looking for...http://www.antenocitisworkshop.com/bases-and-basing-materials.html?p=6

I just got some of their yellow builders sand and have covered massive quantities of terrain with it. You get a good mix of large and medium grains in it as well.

Not to mention you get about 800 years worth of supply from it

I should also mention that in some countries (such as, I believe, the UK) it is illegal to remove sand from beaches.
