Hey all, trying to get back into the game and this is my first shot at a workable army list so I'll have a reference on what to buy (other than just 'models I like the look of). Any comments/criticism is welcome, I'm new to the game in it's current incarnation

First list
Spoiler:
Chaplain 135
Jump pack
Plasma Pistol
Melta Bombs

Tactical Squad 230
9 Marines
Flamer
Multimelta
Sergeant w/ Power weapon
Rhino

Tactical Squad 235
9 Marines
Meltagun
Missle Launcher
Sergeant w/ Power weapon
Rhino

Tactical Squad 235
9 Marines
Meltagun
Missle Launcher
Sergeant w/ Power weapon
Rhino

Dreadnought 125
2x Twin-Linked Autocannon

Dreadnought 115
Multi-Melta
Dreadnought CCW w/ Heavy Flamer

Assault Squad 225
9 marines
2x Flamer
Sergeant w/ Lightning Claw

Predator 85
Autocannon
Side Sponson w/ Heavy Bolters

Vindicator 115

Did some research around the 'net, apparently Assault Marines have more limited potential than I'd like (original intent was for Assault Marines and Chappy to hop around the backfield as support for the tac marines, finishing smaller units weakened by tac fire, protecting against deep strikers/infiltrators, contesting objectives endgame if they're still around). New list adds a bit more ranged punch in the form of a 2nd Pred, both now being Auto/Las, and a Sternguard Squad w/ Libby in a Razorback.

Second Try
Spoiler:
Librarian 100
Null Zone
The Gate to Infinity

Tactical Squad 240
9 Marines
Flamer
Multimelta
Sergeant w/ Power Fist
Rhino

Tactical Squad 235
9 Marines
Meltagun
Missle Launcher
Sergeant w/ Power weapon
Rhino

Tactical Squad 235

Rhino

Sternguard Squad 210

2x Meltagun

Dreadnought 125
2x Twin-Linked Autocannon

Thanks!

*edit1* For spelling
*edit2* This list will be something of a take-all-comers list, I'm new to the area and don't really know what's common around here. I know there are a couple SM players, a mech IG, a battlesuit-centered Tau, and a 'nid player. Beyond that, no idea

Did some research and reworked the list, any input on either list is appreciated

Well, I'd go for 2 full Tacticals in Rhinos, as 2 troop units should suffice - combat squadding can be done if necessary.

Well, what would I replace them with? Your beginner's guide is actually one of the resources I used in my preliminary research, and all your lists include 3 full troops choices. Many other threads here also criticize army lists for only have 2 troops choices.

Not trying to be difficult, but the information I'm getting is quite a bit contradictory.

Thanks

I am also still a beginner Witty, despite having been collecting for months, I don't actually use them much and still building too, so take my advice with a grain of salt please.

Personally, I use the Meltagun and Multi-melta gun in the same unit as they are targetting something big and nasty and don't want to be failing because of 1 bad hit roll. If they are in a rhino, it gives you a big solid squad numbers wise for getting in there, and also has the same type of target.

Flamers go with missiles for combat squads, as the danger of these weapons is in the ability to do things a large squad don't do. Missile in a backline combat squad is a good diversion, as it can still hit across the table until someone spends an effort to go and get it. Flamer combat squad is the first line defender against a wad of enemies looking to overrun your position. They get a good hit in, and become the tarpit for a turn to let you reposition your bigger squads if you need to.

Other than that: you have an awful lot of anti-tank with lots of meltaguns from different units, which is good, but it makes your predator lascannon sponsons less necessary. If those become heavy bolter sponsons instead, you save loads of points and gain more shots against infantry or light armor.

Careful with upgrading sergeant close combat ability too. Their weapons are so stupidly expensive. One or two is good for the sacrificial "tarpit" squad I said earlier, but between losing a couple of those and the Predator lascannons, you could easily fit in another HQ or another tank, (just for fun), or more Sternguards for that squad (who are awesome and would be my choice)

Robouteo - Thanks for the comment. I can see exactly what you're saying as far as special/heavy weapon consolidation, I've got them a bit spread out currently to increase flexibility, but it does leave each squad a bit lacking. If I were to run a flamer/ML squad and combat squad them, it would be beneficial then to swap from a Rhino to another Razorback (giving more anti-horde). I think I'd still keep the power weapons, since giving each squad at least a chance in CC could pay off

Swapping out the Preds to heavy bolter sponsons would save me about 70 pts, where would that be most beneficial? I could easily use 10pts swapping the Sternguard to all combiweapons, but that last 60 is just kinda there; maybe extra armor for all four transports? Upgrade Libby to Epistolary? I dunno
