i'm starting a new space wolves army but don't want to fall into the trap of buying loadsa stuff i dpn't need i want an army list that i will stick to for these.

so thunderwolves are they too expensive for 1500pts? or does it depend how i kit them out

fenrisian wolves can they be used effectively? they seem like a decent cheap screen to me but i'v not seen anyone doing it

scouts... i like scouts, would taking 10 be silly waste of points?

lone wolves i love the idea of but are they a waste of an elites slot?

Wolf Scouts are good harassment units.
They can be used cheaply to take out backline artillery support.
TWC might be a touch expensive for 1500 depending on the rest of your list.
Fenrisian Wolves are only really good as a screen for other units.
Love Wolves can be good if outfitted properly, they can also provide a very god distraction.

I agree with purplefood. You might be able to squeeze two TWC and a WL attached at 1500. I've seen a Lone Wolf crush people and then the same Lone Wolf just get stomped. I've heard people say they are hit and miss. I personlly don't know because i don't use them but just giving you insight from experienced players who use them.

Lone Wolves are pretty much always a win...
They are pretty cheap and if they are swamped they have at least drawn some attention that would be somewhere else. If they are ignored they will probably manage something.

okay so what i've seen rune preists with LL and JOTWW, longfangs with ML's and grey hunters with melta and razorback are pretty standard... is that a good place to start and then build on that?

To answer the op question. Three units of grey hunters is a must at 1500 points. A good set up is full packs with double meltas, wolf standard and mark of the wolfin in a rhino.

A better set-up is 9 man packs with a melta, MotW, and Wolf Banner and accompaniedby a Wolf Guard pack leader with a power fist and a combi-melta.

@1500 this is absolutely true. I would suggest this as your 1500 point "core"

Rune Priest

3x 7 Grey Hunters with Meltagun, Power Weapon, MotW, Wolf Standard, Rhino (attach one WG to each Squad)

3 WG with Combi-melta and powerfist

From there it is really just adding things to flavor the list to your personal preferences. I would go double Rune Priests and Double Long Fangs, but some Wolf Scouts wouldn't be remiss. The basic answer to your OP is simple a Rune Priest and 3 Grey Hunter squads in Rhinos with attached WG.

That isn't helpful. From his original post it is evident he already knows that.

Pretty much anything can work for them, fenrisian wolves need a list more built for them

But to throw my voice in with the others... I'd never take less than 3 packs of GH. Maybe at 1000p and below I might, but I seriously don't think you can go too wrong with a core of 30 GH in rhino's.

You will probably use a RP, as if you're just looking for a HQ to complete the FOC, he's your man. Cheap and damnably effective.
other than that, the biggest conundrum for you (at least it is for me!) is how to use your elite slots. All the choices are really good, and choosing them I've always found to be the hardest part of my SW lists.

And please don't buy 15 missile launchers 1 pack is fine

I like to have 1 unit of LF with PC and LC, and 2 Vindicators if I can afford it. I fight a lot of necrons and grey knights. I like making sure the stuff i hit stays down.
I've also started using BC w. WL in a land raider quite effectivly. Never used thunderwolves yet.

Sorry for the cheeze but 2 packs of LF with ML are good, the krak missles aren't very nice against MEQ and the frag missiles will make necrons wince, with every shot closer to a phase out. Thunderwolves imo at that points cost are too expensive, they make a god deathstar unit but lose effectivness once they become bogged down. The Grey Hunters is an absolute must, but stay away from BC, who don't function well without a runepriest, and even then aren't much better in cc than a Grey Hunter, who is also armed with a bolter. Fenrisian wolves are only really good for screening units to don't want shot to buggery as they approach.

Well, RP, 3 squads of Grey Hunters in Rhinos and 2 or 3 packs of Long Fangs w/ missile launchers form a solid core.

Ok cool thanks guys, will get to work on the core then decide what to take to personalize it. At the moment i'm thinking scouts coz i love them and if thers space for them a unit of thunderwolves.
i'll be putting up a few army lists for criticism before i start building though

Rune Priest's + Wolf Guard + Grey Hunters in Rhino's + Long Fangs - Imagination = Profit?

Wolf Scouts can work very well OP; I'd recommend 5 with a Meltagun and Plasma Pistol for pretty reliable, cheap anti-tank. They can form a great distraction.
Thunderwolves are incredibly powerful, but they're not cheap either, it may be a squeeze at 1500pts, but it can also be very effective.

My must takes in every space wolve list are

Rune Priest with living lightning and jaws of the warpwolf usually chooser as well for the anti infiltrate but sometimes skip it if tight on points.
cheap hq gives you 2 wonderful powers and psyker defense.

5 wolf scouts with melta gun joined by a wolfguard with combi melta and power fist.
great for getting to my opponents back field.

2 units of 5 Grey Hunters with Melta joined by a Wolfguard with combi melta and Powerfist in Rhino
Go get the enemy objective. If there are more points I sometimes add more Grey Hunters to this squad and buy the banner and mark.

1 unit of 5 grey hunters with flamer in a Lascannon TL Plasma Gun Razorback
hangs back on my objective.

2-3 units of 5 Long fangs with 4 Missles usually in Las cannon TL Plasma Gun Razorbacks for dawn of war.
Good Long range support. 3rd unit gets added points permitting.

I add more scoring units, 2nd unit of wolf scouts, thunder wolves etc as points permit.

You really want at least 3 scoring units and some long range shooting along with some melta. This has all that covered.

Meant to say 4 missles on 5 long fangs.

I like Wolf scouts for elites as a way to attack the back field and contest objectives but some like dual tl auto cannon dreadnoughts for more firepower. Depends on what you like.
