I am new to this forum and in a way quite new to Wh40k. I've always liked the little models when I was a kid and about 12 years ago I got my first space marines. I have been collecting (very very slowly) ever since. I now have two squads of Ultra's, a multi melta guy (I bought him merely because he was completely metal), a terminator captain and a assault bike with sidecar. The oldest ones look like crap the newest one (bike) quite nice. I have never actually played a game with them and probably never will. I just like painting them. In any case I know absolutely nothing about rules, lore etc. other than what little information I bothered to dig up through Google.

The thing is I haven't painted a model for quite a while now, because I'm having a bit of a collector's dilemma. I don't really like Ultra's, and I don't think I really like space marines all that much. I just stuck with them because they were on the instruction cover of the starter set when I was a kid and where the only local available models that came in a starter set with paint (also specifically Ultra paint). I want to pick up painting Wh40k models again, but I don't really know how to proceed. I figure I'd only need a couple more marines (maybe a Terminator or two) to complete a small useable army, but I'd like to move on to the imperial guard. Since my 12 year old paint (I may have bought an occasional extra bottle or two) has surely dried out to the point of having formed concrete, I'll have to completely renew my painting gear anyway, so moving on straight to the IG might make more sense at the moment.

Supposed I do start a IG collection, I am at a complete loss what type to get. DKoK is expensive, nigh impossible to get here in Holland and a little too German for my liking, while I find Vostroyans generally too steampunkish. Back when I started painting 12 years ago Cadians and Catachans were the only ones I knew of. A lot of new IG types seem to have been introduced over the years and I was wondering exactly how they get introduced. Can I make a new type myself? Is it possible to create new IG regiments, do people submit suggestions to Games Workshop?

As you can see I haven't really got a clue and would very much appreciate any comment on my situation by you bunch of veteran Wh40k'ers.

With kind regards,

Just make one up and paint it in a made up colour scheme. It's what I did to my marines, never looked back.

The existing champters and companies are just suggestions. Some people enjoy the lore and backstory behind them, but it's always - explicitly! - stated in the rules you should invent your own in whatever color scheme looks pleasing to you. There are many "missing" and unknown chapters of Space Marines just to allow for this very thing, and should you choose to go with IG, the Imperium of Man spans so much of the known universe, virtually anything you could think of surely makes sense somewhere.

Welcome to Dakka!

Welcome aboard! Unfortunately the only plastic liines of IG infantry are Cadians and Catachans. The new command boxes are quite nice, whereas the normal catachans look like human apes. There are however the resin Elysian Drop troops and DKOK. In metal you can find Vostroyans and if you' re lucky Mordians.
Do not despair however because i have seen kit bashes with the lines of fantasy. Empire Flagelants and bretonian Men-at Arms have nice bodies that are compatible with the cadian plastics with a little effort.
To the painting: don't bother withe the choise of colours for your Guardsmen. Pick a quick and easy to reproduce colour scheme that looks good to your eye and go for it. In my army BS4 models have Vostroyan and Stormtrooper models and are painted with blue Cloth and red Armour while BS3 models are cadian plastics with Kommando Khakki cloth and a very dark grey armour.
Hope i Helped

You shouldn't be worried about the one bullet with your name on it, Boldric. You should be worried about the ones labelled "to whom it may concern"-from Blackadder goes Forth!

You know what would be a sweet color scheme? Urban Camo.

Finland... the country next to Sweden? No! That's Norway! Finland is to the east! No! That's Russia!

Well... here are some of the many IG regiments you could like:

Tallarn Desert Raiders
Mordian Iron Guard
Valhallan Ice Warriors
Tanith First and Only
Savlar Chem-Dogs (you need to convert these guys)
Armageddon Steel Legion

Sweet Jesus, Nurgle and Slaanesh in the same box!?
No, just Nurgle and Slaanesh, Jesus will be sold seperately in a blister.
