If people say that, they are not telling lies... You actually play with toy soldiers, just in a more "adult" way...

If people tell you you are wrong doying that, they are wrong, cause there is no law about people playing with toys (i mean, probably, in your country, itr true too).

If you care about they saying that, stop there. The first one who need to not care is you. Believe me, if you dont care, others will matter nothing.

Can i give you a tip? I dont know your age, or in what part of life you are, or the type of people that live around you. But normally, when you take people jokes seriusly, specially about things like sexuality and maturity, people will enjoy it more. By other side, if you take it easy, enjoy the fun, and jump the wagon (dont insult the other guy, just keep ridicularizing THE HOBBY, never yourself) they will start to see that you are a real person...

For example: if that guy tell you that you "play with toy soldiers", tell him that "not only it, i paint and model them too", and when he laugh about it, laugh with him.

It worked for me, but i have 25 years old, am in College, are 1,86 metter tall, and live in Brazil...

And people, dont scrudge the guy. If you dont have nothing better to say, keep quiet. I think this type of comunitty is exactly for people like us to try to help each other, not to nail some guy because he posted something that worried him on the wrong place (let the MODs do that).

I explain people that that is like a hobby... ( it's not easy thing paint all those models )

And that it's not nerdy thing - but quite opposite big social game ( you can't play alone ).

And there is nothing wrong in reading books or playing video games...

And everyone have it's taste, I can get somebody to like it - other's not. But one thing is for sure - nobody will tell me what I can love and what can I do in my free time. Be it either go for a walk, drive a car, eat in bakery or playing video games.

Those people that say you that are bunch of retards...

I tell them how much money I spend on my hobby... and then laugh that they have never even had that much money to spend period... =)

I played pokemon, yu-gi-oh, world of warcraft ALLL that stuff! it was damn fun! and I will never regret it and I will NEVER hide it.
I have always been a confident guy and I never hide from anyone. And I have also never been teased about any of my games because of my "proud" attitude when I reply to someone about why I like such games. they seem content with it after.
So read that codex in front of the biggest crowd and enjoy it!

Either man up and tell them "yep" or wuss out and stop wargaming. You don't need their approval to do something fun, as long as you enjoy it and aren't hurting anyone else by doing it.

If you admit it to liking it and own it then they lose their power. The only power they have to make you feel bad about yourself is what you give them.

I agree with the obviously good replies in this thread. Be confident and shrug when people laugh. Also being really good at what you like helps. I had a friend laugh at me in good fun and then he saw my paintings and sculpts and he looked at me totally differently as a person, like I had a hidden talent he never knew of.

Just don't let anyone push you around. Words can be ignored and they lose their power. If you're in say high school, sometimes kids get aggressive so they can still look cool for picking on someone. I'll leave it to you parents to tell you how to deal with that, but I don't let anyone attack me physically.

I think this is an important issue for young gamers. It would have made me happier if more of the replies had been supportive despite the OP's poor choice of words.

I get that now and then, but most the time I just say "Models..." and let it go if they want to think there toy's thats there call but yeah you gotta blow it off. You have a better broader view on what is involved in the sub culture. They don't know anything of whats involved. You could judge 40k from painting talent to fluff to army play on the table top. Sure they look like toy's and to the average person they see a toy nothing more nothing less they don't know how much information is involved in each toy or model. Its just life, don't let it get to you. If anything you can always say this.... Show them your Codex and say "Lot of information for just toys don't you think?" You can come back with idea's too on it you just have to think about what 40k is too you. For me its about painting and being involved in a universe that is unlike other things. Use it, express it and be creative within it. But never be ashamed of it...

I've never had anyone say something negative about it, I tell them it's a hobby, and maybe it is a bit nerdy, but no ones insulted me about it.

My usual response is the coolguy shrug and something along the lines of
"I ain't even mad, bro"
or something to that effect.

Mostly? Nobody cares. I read my stuff at work, at restaraunts, in parks, etc and nobody says a thing. Last time someone tried to say something I pointed out that the poster of Brett Favre on his cubicle had a clear outline of his **** through the spandex plain as day. He stopped talking.

Who cares? I thought that "Nerd vs. Jock" stereotype was done after highschool.

People don't really peg me for a nerd, even though I've been playing 40k for over 3/4 of my life. The usual reaction is, "Whoa, you paint!? Cool!" The gaming aspect is secondary. I've found that people either don't care, or are really intrigued.

If people say, "So, you play with toy soldiers?", then you might want to explain it to them. "Think of it as chess, but far more complex. It's up there with Bridge in terms of complexity."



You could be doing far stranger things with your time, like cosplay, LARPing, prostitution, or "fantasy football".
