My wife is about to start playing BA and wants to play an assaulty army. Possibly lots of psychics as well. We're planning on picking up the BA starter kit and Codex, but what else should we grab for her? She loves the look of the sanguinary gaurd, but I've heard they're nothing but a points sink.
While she does want to play a CC orientated army, she still wants some dakka as well. So... suggestions? She cares nothing about the fluff if that's a consideration.

I think that some other good additions would be a Librarian, Baal Predator and maybe a Furioso/ Death Company Dread.

Sanguinary Guard are OK and if she really likes the look of them then you might as well think about them.

Sang, guard, from what I've seen, tend to be a bit of a glass hammer. If you.. or her... do run them then I'd recommend deep striking them if possible.

I would also advise taking full advantage of your tanks fast ability. Moving and fully firing Predators are pretty handy.

perhaps look at taking assault marines and getting them a razorback or a rhino cheaply when they trade in their jump packs.

A huge issue with the Sanguinary guard is, IMHO, they lack the cannon part of the glass cannon. Their points cost can easily rival a land raider and they have none of the survivability of terminators, they're gorgeous models but the pain of assembling those shiny winged jumppacks and their points sink makes me feel that it isn't worth the hassle.

Death company dreadnoughts with blood talons are brutal in CC, but from what I can tell they have the stopping to pop the bigger tanks, so it's a "kill squads of infantry at a time or take out their armour" situation. Assault squads help make a good core, alongside death company as your CC wrecking ball. Chaplains are great additions to the squads, especially with DC. I've yet to try Baal Predators, but I've heard they pack a punch. A devastator squad (in my experience) can be useful fire support when you start, and the kit also supplies all your pretty heavy weapons. If you lean towards assault squads, a Sanguinary priest will help them survive.

2 more pieces of advice: don't take too many death company in a squad, and get into CC as fast as you can, BA aren't there to hang back.

I havent used them a great deal but where i have i rather like sang guard, i do agree with the glass hammer bit though. they pack a hellofa punch against power armour.
Sanguinary Priests never go amiss, pretty low points cost for feel no pain 6" radius, great for escorting slower moving squads or equiping a jump pack and running with faster moving assault squads.

Thanks for the move, I wasn't sure where to put it.
I think what she's going to do is buy the sanguinary gaurd and just use them as her basic jump troops if they really suck that bad, but from what you're saying its just a matter of using them right.
I saw the Baal pred... that's nice. A FA pred that can equip power armor melting flamers

or just throw the AC on em and let 'er rip for some longer range support.
I'll see about getting her an Sanguinary Priest and chaplin. ATM I'm thinking of letting her use my AOBR captain I threw a jump pack on as her HQ

I rarely use it anymore, as space wolves don't do jump packs so well...

and Taopaipai, please. I think we will both appreciate it.

Well i decided on a list for 1500 and am pretty pleased with it, its not as entireley CC as i planned as it does run with 1 tac squad and some HS, will post again after wednesday when i know the results XD
