Hey guys,

I've painted about 8 models so far, 6 Orks, 2 Space Marines. I'm not all that happy w/ the Space Marines but I feel like the Orks have turned out pretty decent. I've never painted miniatures at all and thought I did a good job but I'd like some critiques!

I primered with P3 black. I think that was a mistake on the Space Marines since I wanted a little bit brighter red. Worked fine for the Orks, and I like the ones with more brown skin!

For highlighting, I use Chainmail and Boltgun dry brush and Badaba Black wash. I goofed on the larger space marine and washed after the dry brush so the drybrush kinda spread around!

I used a $15 brush set (7 or so brushes), the 40k paint starter kit and 4 additional colors. I think I would be going back and getting at least delvan mud wash and a few other colors.

This was also my first time with a light box (I made it today). Pics are taken w/ a Canon T1i, 70-200mm f4L, 50mm f1.8, 10-22mm f3.5. I think I will be getting an extension tube to try a little macro and if I like it enough get an actual macro lens.

I'm anxious for your feedback!

There really good, my first minis were blob upon blob of rubbish

But no i am quite impressed for your first go, better than my painting and iv painted a fair few in my time, (been out of th ehobby for a while though so just picking it up again).

I would offer you this as advice though, make the orks the same coloured skin as the second one in, its your best painted ork out of the three you posted imho.

In regards to the space marine, its really good, if you paint your whole force like that i think you'd have a nice little army.

Well done mate, kudos.

Theres something about raiding planets and then bathing in the slaves misery and torment that really gets me. I love DE, and can now play in 2000point matches with the addition of my latest stuff! Kabal of the Purple Blaze.

I also have 2 squads of IG Shock troopers and a Platoon Comand squad as a start to my IG army For Cadia Check out my blog - http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/380874.page#3047386

Nice minis man! only peice of advice i can see is trying too make the eyes really pop out
Make it dark in one corner, than gradually getting lighter and finally a small white dot in the opposite corner
Oh and get rid of those mold lines! It'll make them look better, and make them easier too paint

Wow, your first minis are awesome! The marines are appropriately muted colors, and I like the Ork skin texture! Do you have any pics of the Warboss or the Marine Dreadnought yet?

Very good indeed the only problem i see is the mould lines in ork 2. Other than that they are a good standard.

Thanks for the praise and the advice. I like how the brown ones turned out but you are right, the green looks just a bit better. I'll be painting some more this weekend and will post up what are hopefully improved figures!

I'll give this a shot on the eyes... I got a new and better 00 and also a 000 brush so I think it'll be a bit easier to do! I'll be picking up a small nail file Friday to deal w/ the mold lines... it really aggravated me!

Thanks! I don't have any pics of the Warboss of the Marine Dreadnought yet. Maybe i'll give those a try this weekend. The Dreadnought looks fairly tough to paint, lots of hoses and little accessories on the model!

Thanks!!

I've got some tissue paper for my lightbox so hopefully the pics will improve a bit. I'll practice some on my exposure settings. Unfortunately, no extension tube til next paycheck. Will be getting more washes and paints Friday as well!

Thanks for all the great feedback guys, really got me motivated! I have so many miniatures to paint. I'll be playing my first game June 17 with some friends who are also new to the game!

That is a grand start

Seam lines are a nuisance imho but worth taking a bit of time to remove. People have differing tolerance levels though.

Also is always good to see gun barrels drilled, but is also no biggie.

well done

I didn't even think of the gun barrels! Thanks! I'll grab a hobby drill Friday as well!

I think you did really good for your first paint job.

I like the variance in ork skin color, and I think it gives them a bit of depth and individualism.

Only advice I have is drill out those gun barrels and remove more flash before painting.

What's flash?

I hear you on that... I used a hobby razor pen blade thing to cut these out... surprised some of my own blood isn't on these little guys. I've got the perfect set of little snips for this, just gotta find em!

Clean up the seam lines on the models, and drill out the barrels of your guns to give a better look. Maybe bring in a bit of highlighting to your ork guys skin.

Other than that way better than the first ones I did years ago. Keep it up.

Great job, and even though it's the "wrong" skincolour (i think actually it's quite refreshing to see orks with a different skintone) the orks is amazing.

I just think you'll need some practice with higlights!

Keep it up this way =)

Nice to see someone who breaks the mold and paints his orks in a unique skin colour AND does not make his marine ultra-smurfs. Best first minis i have ever seen.
