So guys i really need this for my next army but i won"t say wich one it is don't worry it's nothing personal.. (@
rutger: if your seeing this post, don't think it will be this army ^^ or even these colours.. it might be a set up.. you will never geuss it )

So i found some old gaurdsman model and patched them up cleaned the paint off and repainted them.. i am quite satisfied with the result specially the comander, who's face is the best i have ever done.. a pity it's not clear on the picture.. couldn't find a good focus.. but the heavy chipping isn't what i want it to be.. as you can see below

okay it's not very clear on the pictures but to give you guys an idea: i lightly drybrushed random place on the armour paying special attention to the edges, and used the chipping tecnieque for vehicles, the one with wich you use a sponge.. in this case a very fine sponge
(don't mind the blue wip's in the back)

what i want to learn is hw do you do this chipping?

okay i know.. this is another level of painting way better then mine but hey ya gotta start somewhere ej?? maybe not the best choice to compare my poor gaurdsmen with but you guys get the point i hope

hope to hear lots of tips oon

THX !! !! ! !! ! ! !
sorry to the owner from who i stole the pic..

Chipped paint = no tyranids.
I bet on Orks / Tau

Good luck; i think over-chipping looks awesome but it's such a damn huge amount of work

Chipped paint like the photo you paint is done usining the following method:
1)Spraypaint the model the color you want the chips to look like. In the examples case, a rusty brown.
2)Get coarse, kosher salt. Brush water onto the model where you want the chips, and then pour the salt onto the model. Let this dry.
3) Re-spray the model and salt chunks your actual basecoat color, in that case blue.
4) Use your fingernails to scrape the salt covered in paint off. The parts underneath the salt will have gotten no blue paint on them, be rust colored, and slightly depressed in.
5) Say "daaaaaamn, that looks sweet."
6) Say "Thanks, Doomthumbs!"

That Logan model is not done with salt weathering, and even if it was you wouldn't want to use your nails.

The chipping on that model is painted similarly to this:

No, im pretty sure its salt weathering. Its set in a little, and non glossy.
Weathering like on that tank sticks out, and looks painted on.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

The SW is painted on, not salt weathered. A mid grey initial scratch, highlighted along one edge, shaded along the other to give the illusion of depth.

That sounds like it would take a hellacious amount of time and skill compared to picking off salt crystals, for the same effect.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Besides, salt weathering actually chips the paint.
Might just be my opinion but nothing looks like chipped paint like chipped paint.

The problem is that it will look like 1:1 scale chipped paint, not 28mm chipped paint. It works fine for larger models like vehicles as it won't look as out of scale. It's the same reason why we paint sand so that it looks like sand.

chipping like that just DOES take a helluva huge amount of time. That's just the way it is; and the reason why I don't
BTW Jos, ever tried wet pallette? I found out lately really works awesome to keep your mixed paints from drying up. Just take a water bucket, put a foam piece from a blister pack on top of the water and the paint goes on top. I managed to paint a mixed grey for at least an hour, had dinner for another hour and when I returned I could simply paint on the same damn color! You gotta try; it's freakin awesome µ

Oh, and... Is it orks? I bet it is. If so don't make them glossy cause glossy orks plain suck :p I won't tell rutger come on

@ Kern : yea don't even bother xD he's hard as rock! and my bet is still on Eldar, because that's an army he didn't know so well and in my opinion IS FREAKING AWESOME! because their ancient just like crons $µ^! the new races xD

the chipping will always be a pain in my opinion and seeing you paint so much makes me itchy as I am still banned from my crons and brushes

makes me itchy too, I'm still banned from models as well... by homework and stupid books I'm obligated to read
And learning chinese in the meanwhile doesn't really improve my amount of free time :p
Anyway I don't think eldar; cause who would for godsake weather eldar? they have to be nice and clean... The clues will eventually lead us, detectives, to a moral victory ^^

I remember seeing a tutorial on here a long time ago with that Space Wolf. That weathering was done by painting. If I'm not mistaken, there was a sponge application of the base, then highlighted with a brush. It's been awhile. I may be misremembering.

And that still seems a monumental waste of time to achieve an effect that could be easily replicated by salt weathering. If one were so inclined to drive themselves to myopia, I believe salt weathering would still provide a better base effect to add to.
Then again I play nids and am trying to imagine doing an effect like that for a horde size army.
