A friend and I have been playing weekly at his place and he's been getting trounced every game. We've retweaked our lists, his multiple times, and still can't seem to get a close game. While there is most likely a skill gap he has told me not to go easy on him (not that i'm that good just more experienced) which has resulted in several massacres. I had thought it was the list before but now I'm thinking its the table. I previously thought it would favor assaults since its narrow but the length of the table is a detriment. I'm considering doing Night battles so its much more difficult for the shooty deathwing to get a hold of his things prior to their ability to fire, but what else can I do to make it more even?

Table is 24'' x 60''
We don't have a normal sized gaming table within reach on the average day due to our work schedules leaving us free well after gaming stores are closed. What other scenario ideas will make it more even for the Blood Angels?

Just play at a 250pt handicap or something. Or add more Los blocking terrain. Or you could do something more fluffy, like the battle is on fenris and it's during one of those climate shifts or something, and the world is falling apart, so the table starts to dissapear from the edges, and your shooty units will be forced deploy a little further from the board edge than normal, and often be forced to move and give up use of heavy weapons, or even be forced to run and not be able to shoot at all. Meanwhile, his blood angels will just be moving like they normally do, but the dark angels will be forced to move towards them. Like, after turn two, roll 3d6 each turn and make that many inches from the table edges fall into the sea and any units in those inches die.

Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

What is he playing?

What are you playing precisely?

While the table you're using may be longer than usual, there's no requirement for you to use the whole thing. Why not cut a piece of it off if it will help him?

If shooty deathwing is trouncing on him, it sounds like he may be missing some fundamental grasp of how to put together an effective list.

Blood Angels list:
Librarian- jump pack
Sang Priest- jump pack
2 Assault Squads with dual meltas
Baal Predator
Baal Predator
land Speeder

Deathwing list
Belial- claws
2 Deathwing, th/ss x5, cyclones
Auto-las Pred
2 Typhoons
3 bikes

Cutting off 12'' is definitely in the idea list. we're still deploying at opposite ends of the table unless we play shortways, but then its a first turn assault.

I like the Fenris idea, though 1d6 will keep me moving enough. 3d6 has a chance of just wiping me off the board in one go as I tend to hug the back wall.

You could also treat it like a JoTWW attack and have them make an init test. if they succeed they get to be moved the minimum distance rather than insta-gib.
But have you been talking with him after the game and letting him know the mistakes he made? Letting him know how you would have done things, or other options that might have been better will help him learn rather than just having you trying to level the playing field with (admittedly cool) gimmicks.

That sounds like a good idea. We've talked about errors, but usually he goes over the game in his head and corrects the areas he's messed up before i get to say anything. I've taught him most everything I know, he doesn't wish to attempt deep striking just yet, but other than that he's got the knowledge of the game.

The problem really lies in the board. My usual gaming partners and I used to play on a 3'x6' table, and I (Tau) would get trounced from assaults. The problem with your table is that it creates a natural bottleneck, because it is only 2' wide (this also really hurts the deep strike idea). Also not helping is that you play at 5' long. What this does is forces the assault army to move further to get into range and gives it less room to maneuver in terms of cover and directions to assault from. The playing area really needs to be "regulation" size. There's a few ways to do this depending on your space available:

1) Play on the floor. Probably the easiest, and probably the worst for your back.

2) If you can make modifications to the table, it is very easy to build out fold able sections to get to the 4'x6' size. You can pick up all the hardware and wood from Lowes, or Home Depot, or wherever for under $40 and have it all built up in 30 minutes or so. (Get a couple of hinges, table legs (get the in a screw in variety), and a couple of eye-hinges and you've got table sections that will quickly and easily fold under the table!).

North of your position

1) Make something giving him the Red Thirst automaticly.

2) Make more line of sight blockers.

I was thinking make a scenario with Blood Angels defending against Fallen and start them behind a wall roughly 12'' from the proper board edge, so 24'' from the real table edge. His goal being to stop me from breaching the av14 front, av 13 rear wall in 5 rounds. The game starts with a traditional dawn assault. Good idea?

The floor is doable, the table is out of the question though, unfortunately.

Nuts! Both of us completely forgot about Red Thirst, though last game he never got into cc since he conceded prior to getting into combat with the terminators. Immediate Red Thirst, got it.

Have him try Mephiston so he feels what it's like to have a powerful unit on the board. If he's just plopping anything on the board and getting shot off immediately, he isn't learning the nuances of close combat and movement.

Also, have him try putting his troops in Razors or Rhinos instead of footslogging it. In my experience, Blood Angels in tin cans are much easier to manage than a jump list due to survivability and better firepower. Basically, have him play better lists before he gets discouraged.

Get a second, identical table to the one you already have. Put them together and play on that.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.
