So I just watched the UltraMarines movie for the first time. There were a few things that were a little weird (why did the flamer marine keep puffing flame? Waste of ammo/fuel if you ask me)
BUT I have to say, I dont get why SO many people on here said it sucks and all that BS. Really? Is it just nerdrage or something? Did they even WATCH the movie? Im not going to lie, even the CGI wasnt as terrible as I was lead to believe. Sure it could of been better but I thought the story was pretty decent still. I borrowed it from a friend, and Im pretty sure Im going to get my own copy.
Can someone explain all the hate to me? I know GW deserves it most the time, but this movie was actually pretty decent/good

Really? Your going to get caught up on it "sucking" because it was about the Ultras? I dont care for them as much as the next guy, but the movie itself was still pretty good. Infact I watched it again just now with my son. He loved it.
I can't speak for the others but here's why I disliked it: Frankly after watching all those cool DoW openings, I kinda expected the animation to be on those levels, especially with DoW2. Granted, the company they went with wasn't expensive and the results looks like it matched the cost, but that jsut made me feel like they half-assed it. One minor one that keeps irking me is the lack of glow in the lenses of the Space Marines. One of the things all space marine tutorials note is how to paint the eyes with an almost-glowing glass like texture, and it really nipped at me when that wasn't the case with those marine's eyes. Story wise, when a movie opens with the 40K tagline of "In the far future there is only war" you'd expect alot more fighting than just a few high moments. I know it's cheesy, but it's the embodiment of 40k: violence out the wazoo. it was already the 30 minute mark before any real action took place. The last one of my peeves was the random inconsistencies that cropped up from time to time, namely the banner crackling in the presence of a Daemon, how apparently there are only those marines aboard the entire barge, and how the Chaplain's crozius became a shooting weapon (I at first thought it was a psychic power he used).
I use to say that I also disliked the fact that the squad of 10 marines basically said "ok so we're going into a warzone that killed 100 imperial fists and we're suppose to succeed" as that just sounded like normal Ultra-wankfest, but rewatching again, they suffered some pretty heavy casualties, and it wasn't to beat the chaos forces, just retrieve two people.
My feelings on the matter.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.
When I'm editing alot, you know I have a gakload of homework to (not) do.
Also everyone in the film looked like they were all suffering from a series of old age fail. I mean seriously they look ugly enough to make me vomit. other than that i liked it,
From whom are unforgiven we bring the mercy of war.
The writing wasn't exactly stellar. The Apothecary has some hilarious dialogue and loves to state the bleeding obvious. Apart from that I thought it was really quite a fun film without being exceptional. A pretty good advert for the hobby.
It's watchable. If I was a kid I'd think it was pretty awesome. Kind of reminded me of the Roughnecks Starship Troopers cartoon, but that show was honestly pretty well written and looked better for its time. I didn't hate it, but I'd be pissed if I paid $40 or whatever it cost to get that exclusive deluxe edition or whatever. At the very least it was better than Inquisitor, if anyone remembers that.
My personal thoughts on the movie - (May contain spoilers)
It was decent, but overall I would say not worth a purchase. Here's why, in no particular order:
1) Bland dialogue. As mentioned before, it could have used a lot more... well, everything in that department really.
2) Plot holes. Seriously, lets look at it. A Company Captain is on a strike cruiser with... Ten other marines? Yeah... Okay. What was with the "chain sword of awesome?" It's just a freaking chain sword. Those SHOULD be standard issue. The banner happened to not go off the entire trip back from the planet to the ship too, you notice that? Only after the banner was brought before the chaplain did it ignite. There are a bunch of them, and none too hard to find.
3) The CGI on the Daemon was just plain horrible. The proportions were constantly changing, his legs looked like toothpicks for his body... so on and so forth.
4) I loved how at the very end of the movie, the main character, you know the guy who only just barely became a space marine, became a captain after one mission? If that's how easy it is to become an Ultramarine captain... 5) How easily the power armor was getting shredded by bolter fire. I understand that in the fluff, close range bolter fire turns flesh to goo, but these guys weren't close (I'm talking mainly about the scene where the Land speeder got toasted).
I could go on, but frankly, I think I've gotten my point across.
Was it horrible? Nah. Was it awesome? No. Would I purchase it? Alright, I might buy it for about $5.
Yea I did see alot of oddities during the movie, I didnt say it was the way I would of done the movie, but it still was decent/good. Ill buy a copy if I can find one cheap enough. I just wondered why most felt it burned their eyes and they were emotionally scarred
My complaints were that the CG was basically crap, all the voices sounded the same and the entire movie was pretty predictable, you could see the twist from miles away.
