So picture this:
I have a 5 wide saurus unit with full comand, so if i slap a scar vet and a slaan in there can the frog go in the back since he can't fit in the front.

Sounds right since the Slann can't fit with his huge base.

Thought so, originally i thought to run the unit 6 wide but then i realised this possible benefit.

If a model has a different base size than the unit it is joining, doesnt it have to go alongside the front rank, at the end? (Except with Slann and Temple guard)

Only if the different sized base not perfectly fit(like a 25mm or a Cavalry base joining a unit of 20mms).

Only if he dosent fit, a slaan displaces 4 saurus exactly, like on the diagrams on page 98 of the rulebook, where the daemonic steed displaces 4 warriors.

Or better armor save and parry, and cheaper unit that is core.
Sure the slaan has to spend 35 points to make them all stubborn, but it isn't a bad deal considering that saurus are 5 points a model cheaper.
S4 vs S5 doesn't really matter if you go lore of shadow.

My take has always been that with only ONE character joining the unit, the Slann must go in the front. I don't have the BRB handy, but essentially the rules say characters have to go in the front displacing rank and file. If you put the Slann in the second rank and the scar vet in the front, you have a rank and file in the front. Violating the rule.

Obviously if you have 2 scar vets, you are fine.

You have put as many characters in the front as can go - the slaan cannot fit on the front rank, so cannot be placed ther. The rule talks about characters being moved to the second rank if there is not space for them on the front - which is the case here

I have to agree he goes in the second rank. If the unit champion is killed via directed attacks to him or in a challenge, I would then say the Slann has to move to the front rank. The new FAQ now says characters have to take rnf spots if one is available.

actually the slaan would be in the front rank exactly how it says in the army book. The only benefit the slaan gets is when he's in the temple guard as he can sit in the second rank and still cast even when the unit is in combat.

boyd - did you even reasd the thread?

The Slann cannot fit in the front row, therefore MUST go in the second row

Actually, we should check the wording for the Slaan in the Lizardmen book. Boyd is correct that the Slaan has his own special rule about his placement in a unit, and as such, that may over-rule the basic rule books on characters in the 2nd rank.

THe Slann only has an additional allowance to be in the second rank of TG, and having to join the TG if theyre available.

The book essentially says: "if the Slann is placed in a unit other than Temple Guard, it goes in the front rank as normal."

...so he follows all the normal rules, thus allowing him to be in the second rank due to lack o' space.

Now, if it said: "if the Slann is placed in a unit other than Temple Guard, it goes in the front rank," I'd see a (very stupid) case for it, but not as it is. Nosferatu's got this one on lock. Surprise.

*shucks* - but mainly Hover for thinking of it. I tend to run my slann behind the 40 saurus warriors, as he's a wimp

Thank you warp, it's really nice having actual rule text quoted.

Well, that's not the actual word-for-word quote, but I'm as sure as Descartes says I can be that it's the essential truth.
