Dunno. Say it to him, I think. And give him homework (studying the rules..)

how old is he, second not to sound like a pedo but which club in melbourne do you play at. My advice is make up a fake rule, tell him about it show him how it works, and then piss him off. give him a taste of his own medacine, not to sound like a douche, I have a guy like this at my club. stooped him dead with the same tactic

Just tell him to study the rules otherwise he'll risk no one wanting to play with him, even offer to help him as well if you are so inclined. Assuming he is a very young player, he may not have truely grasped the concept of how to play properly and might be making stuff up to appear knowledgible or some other mis-coneivable idea. If he continues to act like an ass then just refuse to play him. If you've already tried to help him and explained why people aren't wanting to play then he'll either give up the game or realise he needs to buck his idea's up, either way its win win. Unless he's a TFG and can't comprehend basic concepts and drifts through life playing like an idiot.

When I first started playing I was a newb (note not a noob, there IS a difference), I got rules wrong, in some cases me and my brother disgredarded some of the rules entirely in our games. Mainly because at that time it was hard to take it all in and play like pro's so we made mistakes.

It wasn't until a friend of mine taught me how to play properly that I learnt the error's of what we were doing and by that very thing my own games got much better. Perhaps if you or someone would take the time to coach him, he might also learn a thing or two and realise he can win his battles without making stuff up that most seasoned players know to be gak.

I second this. Use small forces (400-500 points) without any special rules until he shows he understands basic moves. Then add a few special rules bits in as he gains knowledge. It took this kind of work to turn a friend of mine from TFG to a decent player.

Tauboy, you dare call yourself an Aussie! Get a sock, fill it up with some cans of fosters and whack him over the head with it!

Patience and encouragement is the key here. Small games with sudden death situations like grabbing an objective or wiping out the other person's army. Much better than calculating victory points.

Your call:

If you want to drive him off, mock him, refuse to play against him, and generally be annoying. Sometimes, but rarely, the best option: usually only if the guys is unredeemable.

If you want to try to get him 'on his feet' for war games, try to be patient. I think others have had a good idea of doing simple games (a couple Troop squads, for example. Or just the 'intro' missions from a box set.)

I know locally we had a young kid who wanted to play a home-brew Space Marine army with a lot of broken rules and it took the voice of experience (not me) to convince everyone, including him, that the best course was to convince him to play by the book a bit then we'd look at his home-brew Codex and maybe give it a try.

i think new players see all the options and may not realize that experienced players are working withing strict parameters. The veterans are playing within the rules (mostly) but know how and when to fudge things for a reason (like a vet who 'forgets' a couple rules to make a game more fun for a new player).

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.

Tell him those exact words?

"You have no grasp of the rules. You make up your own rules and they go against everything written in the rules and codices. I cannot play with you until you learn the rules." No drama, no emotions. Just plain facts. If he can't handle that be nice to him and make sure the door doesn't hit him on his way out.

Mocking him or being annoying is not the way to go. Just refuse to play until he states that he's willing to abide by the rules. If he starts making stuff up again, just drop the game and use the same sentence again. Either he learns what's expected of him, or leaves, when he understands that imaginary rules equals "no fun".

This is the best advice. Mine would have been a variation on a theme, because I don't have the patience for outright dumb noob stuff anymore.

"Hey, do you want to learn this game..." comes off a bit better then just telling someone to S.T.F.U. as well.

It's a game, at the end of the day, "Make it harder then it has to be" isn't part of the equasion.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Hey guys, Just a few things I would just like to say.
Firstly I go to the same (high) school as the OP, and the gaming club is run at lunchtimes on Friday.
Secondly, I know the guy he is talking about. If you check my thread about "What is the most ridiculous fake rule anyone you have ever battle made up?", the kid me and "Da sneaky one" talk about is this guy.
Finally, This guy is ridiculous. I have tried reasoning with him, many times, but he is indignant that his rules are real, saying, "Even check the codex," which he knows I don't have, as he plays completely different armies to me.
I want to help him I just find it hard to talk to a guy who hates me for telling him that moving 8 inches is not the same as moving six inches.

sure you can, if you ask to see the rule in the codex and he can't produce it you tell him the rule does not exist if he bitches you pack up and play someone else who does have a rulebook, eventually he will learn that MAYBE he needs a codex, or make a rule for your group that EVERYONE has to follow and is simply no codex+army list, no game.

You may not be able to stop him from playing, but you can stop yourself from playing with him. Simply refuse to play with him until he owns a Codex. It's your game too, and there's nothing forcing you to play with someone who is detrimental to your gaming experience.

We can't really refuse to play with him or we'll get called out for discrimination or something by the supervising teacher. (Bullying maybe?)

everyone in your gaming club donate an pound or dollar and get a codex LOL.

Or go online search for the codex, download it print it and slap it into his face.

I had a kid tell me that a guard get a 3+ save because he stuck a peice of wood infront it and call it a blast shield. He also told me that the bridge he build can be blown out (apocalypse, yes but normal game no)

He also told me that blah blah has a blah balh save which is compeletly wrong. and his army is totally illegal, his tau consist of 3 man warrior team, 4 man warrior team 2 crysis suit and 1 sniper drone LOL.

I laugh and laughed, I think everyone mocked him for the whole day.

Have you discussed this with your teacher? It's not bullying if he's being unreasonable. It's tough when you've got that kind of restriction, but so long as the teacher's a reasonable type, they should understand where you're coming from.

Well, chumming up with the teacher always helps

I haven't seen this guy in person (I'm assuming he only showed up in the past couple of weeks, as I was sick, then it wasn't on, and so) but I haven't known TauBoy and Gutsnagga to exaggerate too much. Guess I'll just have to meet him tomorrow.

Best of British luck to you. Not sure what the conversion rate to Australian luck is at the moment, but it's probably in your favour.

There were a fair few types like this when I was in school. The good news is, you get more control over who you play with as you get older. And remember, even dogs can by taught.

Just got told who this guy (facebook ftw).

Yeah, he's a , and got banned from playing D&D with us about a year ago for the same reason. Now that I know who the guy is, I know which strategies to employ. It's pretty close to sorted.

Have you spoken to the supervising teacher about the issue?

Explain that the guy is unable at present to play the game according to the rules.
Don't express yourself in a way that suggests excluding the guy, just that you would like him to get along with everyone.

The supervisor should already be seeing something is up tbh and already interevened.
I would not like to see this sort of behaviour from one of our group members as it is obviously going to be disruptive and cause ill feeling.

He claims that he has the Choas codex and some Khorne berzerker type guys, and says he would bring them in, as no-one else is willing to lend him their models.
We will just have to wait till next friday, to see if he has had any change of gameplay at all...

Mmmmm.... Noobjus...

Seriously though; exercise as much patience as you can with him. More likely than not he is eager to learn (me being very optimistic), so try to account for that as much as possible.

We were all once noobs remember (though hopefully not as bad).

However, if the situation is completely beyond repair, go with suggestion 1.

Cuz if someone doesn't show him how to play with etiquette and respect, then we have the possibility of having another douchey player running around, and I think we've got more than enough of those.

Wow, I'm just amazed at this.

Then again, I never had to deal with this at school - 40k wasn't invented until a year AfTER I'd done my yr12. Nobody even played WHFB at my school. The worst we had was a small group of D&D 'nerds' (they called themselves this).

We had a kid like this in my club just last year. He refused to be shown how to play by the rules. He insisted that his rules were correct - but couldn't produce the codex to prove it (claiming that we banned the use of printed pdfs - we don't.).
We aren't a GW store (or gaming store of any kind) and we really don't care where his 40kays is sourced from. As long as you are willing to play by the rules, and know the rules to your army, and have an army, then you can play.
