I only have a small ammount of experience working with resin, but I'm wondering if with GW's new finecast kits that we'll have to take the same protectice measures when filing them down or chipping off small pieces? Wearing a mask or doing it outdoors etc?
If so, I'm kind of surprised that GW hasn't made a bigger deal of this.

Check out the several other finecast threads which have answered this question.
Basically GW says "finecast has been certified as safe" by whatever toy regulators are around.
I would still recommend you use sensible precautions/protection though.

So does this mean we all need to wear masktexts any time one goes to a GW store to play since they have spots for people to put together and paint models?

It's not necessary, but it is a good idea. Any kind of resin isn't dangerous unless you've got your nose on the model while you're filing it. Of course that's just my experience.

Very true, the only time resin dust from sanding becomes an issue is if your doing excessive amounts of sanding with say.. a dremel. The risk to your health with a hand file is small as long as your not filing a couple of inches under your nose.
